Title: Installing Rockbox using MacBook. What’s wrong?
Post by: misnelstain5 on May 27, 2020, 01:50:46 PM
I’m not sure I’m missing something here, as this is becoming too difficult to be true.

I am running OSX Catalina and there is no installer for it on the website. I have tried 1.4.0 and the machine tells me the program creator needs to update the app. The 1.4.1 is not available for OSX to download, only Windows and Linux.

I attempted to download the manual firmware, many times. When it’s downloaded the folders are completely empty.

Rockbox Utility is a 32bit application (actually it's a fat binary that also runs on ppc). Nobody was able to build the recent release version, thus no binary exists. There are currently some issues with building it on MacOS.

The zip files you downloaded are not empty. They contain a folder that starts with a dot. This is hidden on MacOS. You can see that using the Terminal (or enable showing hidden files in Finder, though I don't know how to do that -- I'm using the terminal for stuff like that.) The manual should mention that in the manual installation section. Seems it doesn't explicitly do that though.

Finally managed to get an updated MacOS binary done. It's basically 1.4.1 with some changes to make it build on my old machine. Need to find time to get that in a state it can get merged back, but time is always this limiting factor. Targets 10.7 and up. Since I'm stuck at 10.11 I have no idea if ot works on Catalina.

If you want to try it:

No I can't.

"something" being wrong is way to unspecific for anyone to "fix" anything. You need to be as specific as possible for anyone to be able to help you. I have absolutely no idea what your problem is, so I can't do anything about it. As long as that's the case I cannot help you.

Ideally post the System Trace (Help / Troubleshoot / System Trace) output to pastebin.com or similar and put a link here.

Does running as root matter on macos like on Linux? Could try that and see if it helps.

It looks like you have to be logged in as administrator or use 'launch as root'

Ok, let me try to recapture what you did without knowing what you did.
Is that correct?

Try the following: Press cmd-Space. Type Terminal, then press Enter. Type the following:

sudo /Volumes/RockboxUtility/RockboxUtility.app/Contents/MacOS/RockboxUtility

You'll end up with a password prompt in the terminal. Enter your password. Rockbox Utility will start. Try installing the bootloader again.

And repeating myself: You need to be as specific as possible for anyone to be able to help you. I'm not motivated to do guesswork, especially since I'm not getting paid for this.

Where is your rockbox utility installed?  Try and fix that path if it is installed somewhere else.

Ok, so I don't know if my guessing was correct. Assuming it was.

Why did you install Rockbox Utility? There's no need to do that. Double-click the dmg, MacOS will then mount the volume and it will appear at the path I mentioned. At least on my box running 10.11, and since I have no clue what you're running I can only assume it'll be the same.
