Title: Android: rasher's unmodified daily builds.
Post by: rasher on June 30, 2011, 01:11:00 PM
I will be hosting, until a time when official daily builds become available, builds of Rockbox for Android, updated daily. I'll not be updating this thread unless something dramatically changes.

The builds will be unmodified from SVN, as with my simulator builds.

Find them on http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/

I'll add resolutions if requested (but keep in mind the lack of default themes).

Cheers

Thanks :) Unfortunately Rockbox is still very unstable.

Hi Rasher,

Great work on your builds!!

I have the Samsung Galaxy 7" tab and I've installed your 1024x600 apk. Is there anyway I can simply change the orientation to have it sit in portrait mode? If there isn't, could you please post a version that be displayed in 600x1024?

Thanks!

Did you move it to the SD Card?  If so, then move it back to the phone.  This is a limitation of Android, widgets can't be on SD.

Just installed Rockbox for Android on the newly released Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0.  (nice little tablet)

Rasher's 800x480 build (Thank you).  Default cabbie 2.0 theme.

Works quite well.

Suggestions for the config file before starting:

volume: -73
font: /.rockbox/fonts/35-Adobe-Helvetica.fnt

Or one may find the application difficult to navigate and the sound extremely loud.   :)

Album art works fine.  EQ settings and Bass Treble don't work (crash).  But is is very usable, sounds good with .ogg -q7 & -q8.  Navigation seems quick  GAPLESS!!!!!

The regular EQ crashes?  I can't think of a reason why that should happen, it shouldn't touch the app parts at all.
Title: Re: Android: rasher's unmodified daily builds.
Post by: TexasRockbox on October 17, 2011, 02:46:03 AM
Was able to turn on the EQ and used the simple EQ, not the graphical one because of the very small font size and display. I can try again and test further.

UPDATE: The Samsung 5 (for the USA) uses Android 2.3.5.

TexasRockbox,

If you don't mind using your tablet in portrait orientation...you can install a 480x800 .apk (from rasher's daily builds) and my theme from the tracker (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/12254?project=1&type=4&order=dateopened&sort=desc) which should increase the usability for you *immensely*...

Let me know how you get on.

Wow!

Portrait is fine, just wanted to see a landscape Rockbox build.  Installed 480x800 and your theme.  Thank you very, very much!  I'm getting on quite nicely.

Somehow, I was under the impression that Android themes were an intrinsic part of the build -- that is, new theme or any change to a theme -> new build required.  I definitely had the wrong impression.

Thank you to all those working on the RaaA.

When using the EQ .OGG Vorbis files seem to cause the crash.

I tried .m4a files, no crash using the EQ and Bass/Treble worked as well.

Does the database.ignore function work with these builds and, if so, where should database.ignore be located to avoid Android .ogg files?

Does the database.ignore function work with these builds and, if so, where should database.ignore be located to avoid Android .ogg files?

It's Rockbox...so, yes.

You'll need to be rooted for this, so, I hope you are :)

You want to put the database.ignore in /system/media/audio/

And then you'll avoid the database picking up your ringtones, etc. You'll also want to put a database.ignore file in the root of your sdcard, and put a database.unignore file in any directories that you want Rockbox to look in, as some Android apps like to store app data (which may or may not include audio lifes) on the sdcard.

EDIT: This could be done with ADB push, also.

I suspected as much  I bought the Samsung YP-G70/CWY  on Oct. 15 (day before release).  I'm not brave enough to root it (yet) although I have read that the device may be rooted already.

I'm really liking your theme.  It, uh, *Rocks*!

You _might_ be able to achieve this with ADB push?

I just recognized that CPU usage of rockbox on my Samsung Galaxy S (running Gingerbread 2.3.5) is usually between 15% and 25% (most of the time about 20%) during playback. Even when playback is paused a CPU usage of about 2% is shown in the task manager. For other players like the stock Samsung player or Winamp most of the time 0% CPU usage is shown (what I don't understand, how can it be 0%?).
Does that mean that rockbox will drain my battery much faster than the other players? And does anybody know why there is such a big difference in CPU usage compared to the other players?
I do not use any EQ (even no bass or treble).

Hi,

Ok, I got the .apk file for the Cowon D3 and now what? Where do I put it? In the Cowon's route? Its my first experience with Android, so don't laugh at me :P

Make sure Android is configured to allow program installation from sources other than the Android Store.

Download the file directly onto the D3 from rasher's site.

There should be an option to install the program.
Title: Re: Android: rasher's unmodified daily builds.

Thanks a tone. I'm just wondering where are all those options.
Title: Re: Android: rasher's unmodified daily builds.
Post by: [Saint] on October 31, 2011, 03:38:10 AM
It was slightly poorly worded.
There's only one option you need to worry about:

Settings - Applications - Unknown Sources (make sure this is checked)

After that, simply transfer the .apk file to your device's sdcard, then navigate to this file and select it. It will then prompt you to begin the installation.

That's all.

My understanding is that BBE on Cowon devices is sound enhancement applied in software so I would say 'no' to that, but I'm open to correction.

I tested the rockbox 480x800 Android on a orange Monte Carlo Cell Phone and the 6 band EQ is so small I can't touch it...  It's very very small on the top of the screen. Impossible to work with. Does the same happen on the Cowon D3? If it does, can't you correct this?

Try using "Advanced EQ" instead.  It gives access to the same parameters as the graphical EQ.  Maybe it will be usable.

Check the low shelf filter -> Cutoff frequency, same for the high shelf filter.  The other three filters utilize "Centre Frequency".

My understanding is that BBE is an hardware based effect (I'm not talking about the Cowons EQ, just BBE), so it should work along with rockbox.

Why would expect it to fall over in this case?

I meant that it seems to be application specific and not a global setting and not in hardware. I had a Cowon D2 and, while it wasn't running an OS like Android, it obviously couldn't use BBE inside Rockbox. I don't own a D3 so probably should have kept my mouth shut! ;)

The difference here is that Rockbox is an OS replacement on the D2...whereas Rockbox as an Application is, well...exactly that, an application on the D3. A guest, inside an already running OS.
So the OS is perfectly capable of taking the audio and pissing around with it further in software if it wants to.

I wasn't calling you out, or trying to flame & shame. I was genuinely curious if you knew of a specific reason why it would fall over in this case.

I get a pretty consistent and pestersome issue when using the latest build (at least, as of a few days ago) on my Thunderbolt.  Intermittently, but often, when either re-entering the app thru the status bar, or turning the screen back off while the WPS is up, I lose audio and playback completely - the program is up and responsive, i can hit "play / pause", but the timer does not tick and no sound is made.  I am then forced to manually close (or let the auto-shutoff timer expire) and then freshly open the app to get sound back.

BBE is global on the D3, it works in every audio and video app. Rockbox + BBE = now I can die happy.

I have this problem as well and chalk it up to the software being very beta. It's a little frustrating and inconvenient but a small price to pay for being able to use Rockbox on my Droid Bionic. I've always missed it since my F40 decided to give out on me last year.

Love the design of these recent builds.
It's great being able to replace an music player device by an android smartphone completely.

Not sure if it's the right place to ask, but: Can the repeat from A to B function be used with this build? If so I'm too dumb figuring out how to do it.

crap, i only just saw your reply here... but thanks for commenting, it's nice to know that it's not just me having the issue, and (for what it's worth) that it's not just on the Thunderbolt.  I'm only now about to upgrade to the latest build (even though it's more than 2 weeks old now) and maybe, just maybe, that might fix it?  It seems doubtful but I'll hope.

Edited to add:  The most recent build (as mentioned, it's from a few weeks ago now), doesn't *seem* to still have my aforementioned error, but it *seems* to now simply crash on any track change (manual or automatic, even when crossfade is disabled).  I need to test this out a bit more, of course, but was wondering if anyone else could confirm or reproduce this.

I hope sometime I will also be able to compile Rockbox. I hang at an error with the variable for the Android SDK at the config. I have not so much free time to test something after my work. :(

Would it be possible to have a 1280x752 build (Samsung Galaxy 7.7)?

Thank you for your time and builds!

Update:

Nevermind (I guess).  I see a reviews where the screen resolution is specified at 1280x752 or 1280x800.  I've been informed that the bar at the bottom makes  the height 752.  Running the 1280x800 installation of RaaA results in a message about stretching or zooming the image.

Would one get that message if using no theme but the Rockbox default?  We'll find out, I guess.

I'm working on a 1280x800 theme.
Title: Re: Android: rasher's unmodified daily builds.
Post by: evilnick on March 07, 2012, 12:13:34 PM
You're right, the full resolution is 1280x800 but the bar at the bottom (status bar? button bar? I'm not sure of the official name) takes up some of the 800 pixels. This can actually be removed/hidden if your device is rooted.

The Zoom/Stretch dialogue can be safely ignored, and please keep us updated about a 1280x800 theme, since I'm very interested in using RB on my GTab 10.1 :)

Has anyone noticed different scroll behavior between Gingerbread and Honeycomb?

On my Samsung Galaxy 5 Player 2.3.5 device (480x800 build) scrolling through the file browser is smooth.

On my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 3.2 device (1280x800) scrolling through the file browser is jerky and goes back to the top of the file list.

I tried the 480x800 build on the 1280x800 device and the scrolling is still jerky.

These are default installs with the latest builds of each, no theme installed -- whatever is installed by default.

There's a bug with kinetic scrolling and scrollbar on the left somewhere in the code.

Seems to working OK (so far) on Android 4.0.3 (ICS).

I'm wondering about the resolution and the effect of the status bar.

Instead of custom resolutions how about a range of builds of 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10 for small, medium, large resolutions screens.  Then, create a theme that will fit the screen resolution.

For example, if my Android tablet had a screen that was 1024x768 I could install a 1280x800 Rockbox build and design a theme for the 1024x768, right?  There might be some wasted memory but it should work, right?

Thank you!

It runs fine on the 04/06 build but not on the 04/12 build. I don't have the 04/11 build to test whether it works.

I enclose my logcat output during crashing. I hope it is useful.

I just managed to compile rockbox for android and I will now try to checkout and compile different versions between 04/06 and 04/12 to find which change causes the crash.

I compiled and tested now all versions between the working version bb0e4cc of 04/05 and the crashing version 73732f4 of 04/11 and found that the bug was introduced with version 688302a of 04/08 13:15. All earlier versions (back to bb0e4cc of 04/05) are working and all later versions are crashing.

I hope this helps to find and solve the problem.

It may be a little bit off topic  :'( but how can I bring up the playlist viewer menu with the playlist viewer settings like "show icons", "show indices" and "track display" (to select between file name only and full path for playlist entries) in the Android version. Since there are no hardware buttons I have no idea how to enter these menus (which was, I guess, pressing long SELECT while viewing the current playlist on my old ipod video). I did not find a manual for the Android version, probably since it is still not a supported version.

Post Merge: April 20, 2012, 05:40:40 PM
I compiled and tested now all versions between the working version bb0e4cc of 04/05 and the crashing version 73732f4 of 04/11 and found that the bug was introduced with version 688302a of 04/08 13:15. All earlier versions (back to bb0e4cc of 04/05) are working and all later versions are crashing.

I hope this helps to find and solve the problem.
Works just fine on my legend. Tried the latest rasher build. Can you share you config.cfg?

It may be a little bit off topic  :'( but how can I bring up the playlist viewer menu with the playlist viewer settings like "show icons", "show indices" and "track display" (to select between file name only and full path for playlist entries) in the Android version. Since there are no hardware buttons I have no idea how to enter these menus (which was, I guess, pressing long SELECT while viewing the current playlist on my old ipod video). I did not find a manual for the Android version, probably since it is still not a supported version.

I would be very thankful if somebody could point me to the correct direction.

Long press on the menu button or long touch on a menu item brings up the context menu. But I notice the settings submenu is gone. Need to investigate.

here it is. Is it the one you wanted? It's from /sdcard/rockbox and there's not much in it.

I thought it must be long pressing the menu button but I did not find the settings submenu, that's why I tought there must be another way to call it. Thanks for the response.

Another question relating to the Android port (or general to touch screen versions): How can one highlight an entry in a list without selecting it. For example, if I am in the playlist viewer showing the list of just playing songs with my ipod (running rockbox) I was able to scroll through the list which moved the higligting bar through the list and then I could select the desired entry by pressing enter. With the touchscreen I found no way only to highlight a certain entry. This is important if all entries are very long and have the same starting text. For example "Ludwig von Beethoven, Symphony No. 9 - 1. Adagio" cannot be distinguished from "Ludwig von Beethoven, Symphony No. 9 - 2. Andante" in the playlist viewer since the distinguishing part is cut off. With my ipod I could highlight the entries with the scroll weehl and the highlighted line started horizontally scrolling so I could see the complete text. With the Android port I can only touch the line, but touching the line does not only highlight it but also selects it and so starts playing. That's why I ask. This problem also exists in other list with long entries.

@kugel:
In version 688302a (checked in by you and which is the first crashing version) only apps/gui/bitmap/list.c has been changed and the description says:

touchscreen: Rewrite kinetic scrolling using a state machine.

Which of these changes can have an influence on long pressing the play button?

It may be a little off topic, But I wonder if rockbox for android, would ever support the pause/play & pre/next buttons on a headphone remote, such as the remote which comes with the htc, or similar ! (Rockbox already stops & resumes playback when getting calls, including when using the remote to answer)

It's already possible to control RB running on Android with a "remote helper" application, but that's an extra hassle. I know that some music apps support this natively, so assume that it'll get added to Rockbox at some point.

I compiled the current version d29a11b but now the problems are even worse. Version d29a11b crashes rockbox as soon as I try to play any song (maybe I should have mentioned that I use ogg vorbis files).

I looked through the change logs and found that in version c9bcbe2 it was stated "Fundamentally rewrite much of the audio DSP". In order to test if this change my be the reason for the crash I first compiled version c9c1349 which was immediately commited before c9bcbe2 and in this version playback still works. Then I compiled c9bcbe2 and rockbox crashes as soon as I try to play any song. So it seems that version c9bcbe2 introduced a severe bug (at least for playing ogg vorbis files on my device).

Although version c9c1349 does not crash on playback it still crashes on long pressing the play button (which was introduced with version 688302a as previously reported). Maybe this problem is also related to ogg vorbis files only?

And finally I found that the behavior of the hardware back key has been changed. Usually, when pressing the hardware back key rockbox goes up e.g. one menu level or it leaves the wps screen to the browse menu. Now when pressing the hardware back key rockbox exits the application so you can't use this key any longer to go back through the browse menus.

I have to go back to version a12b2a5 which is the last working version on my device  :(

Please be concise with the bug report. People get notifications by email, and if there are a bunch of notifications all starting with "Task opened: In Rockbox for Android ..." people are likely to stop reading -- all those summary lines look the same (remember, such a long line will be truncated in most cases when displaying). Besides, it's pretty likely that, if you file a bug, it appears in Rockbox since it's the Rockbox issue tracker. Don't state the obvious (at least in the summary, the detailed description is a different story).

I just wanted to point out that the last 3 builds (all in May) have caused my Cowon d3 (with Ogg files) to crash.

I am able to install, initialize the database.  However, once I re-boot, I receive the following white screen message:

Panic
audio_reset_buffer_noalloc(): EOM(65536>0
bt pc: 0x81057ae0, sp: 0x4462fa80

      A: 0x81030dfc
      A: 0x8101ac40
bt end

EDIT 5/18- None of the newer builds fix this problem.  The last good working build was 4/17 (392fbb4-120417).  If I get a chance this weekend, I will wipe out my library and try a newer build with Flac or MP3 files.

Has anyone else noticed that the setting choice bar disappears when a setting is made?

For example, if equalizer is turned "on" then when one goes back to the equilizer setting the bar indicating "on" is no longer present.  The equalizer is turned on but there is no indication of that status except in the config file.

As best I can tell this behavior started happening after sometime in early March.

Connect the player to your desktop PC, transfer the downloaded .apk file from your desktop computer to your player's main memory or microSD card. Disconnect the player from your computer and find the .apk file on the player itself. Select/tap it and it should ask you if you want to install. Select ok and you should be done. Think of an apk file as being a little like an exe file for a Windows PC or a dmg file for Mac.

On the Motorola Defy+, as well as the Samsung Nexus S the Rockbox GUI crashes from time to time. This means the rockbox app only shows a black screen, while the music plays along flawlessly. One thing that doesn't work when the GUI crashes is the function which pauses android in case the headphones get unplugged.
This behaviour can be witnessed on all versions of rasher's unmodified Rockbox for Android versions I tested so far (should have been more than ten).

Is there hope of improvement? Is this bug known?

Hi there,

i just bought an Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 4.2 and installed the rockbox app. Everything works fine so far, but coming from an Archos Jukebox Recorder I miss the voice features.

I have activated voice menus and usage of the .talk clips in the settings, but it does not work at all. What do I need to do to get voice working?

Also, why did the android status bar get disabled? It worked fine while it was included and would at least be a nice option to have (enable / disable in settings for example)

Installed the 480x800 on my HTC EVO 4G, and I've been having a problem with the volume control. Sometimes, when changing the volume, the phone will jump from whatever volume I had it at back to 0db. This has happened a number of ways, including using the side buttons, the touch interface on the now playing screen, and the scrolling list in the sound settings. The problem wasn't present at first, or at least I hadn't noticed it as much, but the jumps in volume are very frequent now, happening almost constantly. I just installed the most recent build but the problem persists.

I had tried to make my own theme a week earlier, so my best guess is that I accidentally altered a config file in a way I shouldn't have and that is causing the problem. I gave up on the theme however and I switched back to the cabbie theme that comes with the build. Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Also, regardless I love what you've done here :) I really missed rockbox after I lost my sansa, and the app is already leagues ahead of anything I've found on the market! Keep up the great work :D

Edit: I tested it out a bit more, and if I use the touch volume control on the now playing screen it will spike for a split second, but does stay at the volume I tell it to. Controlling media volume while the app is in the background also works as it should. I also tried clearing my settings but this did not seem to affect anything.

It's not supported at the moment. You'd need to install the voice files into a directory not reachable from the file browser.

And if there is: Which logs are needed?

It is noticed on Cyanogenmod CM9 RC builds.  It seems to be related to the lock screen/display off/power button.  If one has the lock screen enabled and awakens the device with a power button push there is a quick flash of the lock screen then the screen goes dark otherwise the device remains dark and either a long press power button or battery removal is the recovery method.  I've tried turning the CRT animation off, animations off, etc. to no avail.  I have a couple of themes so it doesn't seem to be a theme-specific problem.  Might be best to go back to a Gingerbread build of Cyanogenmod -- it doesn't to have the problem.

Food for thought: I have never-hacked devices with *official*, non-rooted ICS 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 updates and have no problem with Rockbox on those devices.  CM's push now seems to be towards Jellybean so...

I'm going to give an early build of CM10 a try and see if the problem is still present.

Hey Rasher, thanks for maintaining this build bot, really appreciate it.

But I have a question, can we use the sncviewer or lrcplayer plugins on RaaA? If it's possible, I'd set up my development environment as soon as I can and build the plugin.

Thank you in advance.

My bug doesn't appear with Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3.7).

There is a major bug using CM9/CM10 in combination with rockbox on the Motorola Defy+!
It seems related to the lockscreen.

Furthermore rockbox doesn't work properly on the official Motorola Defy+ software.

Actually the problem seems to be Android 4.0.4 and above.  On two 4.0.4 devices (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 and Motorola RAZR Maxx) and the lockscreen set to "none", the problem appears after a few presses in succession of the power button to close the screen.

UPDATE: My mistake (I guess) the problem seems to have gone away on the Motorola.  Using my own 540x960 theme.

Try CM9 or CM10 again.  I discovered that if I set to allow the volume up/down buttons to wake the device (Settings->Display) the WPS screen will return.  While the power button does not wake the device with Rockbox running, the volume buttons can.

Hi, I installed a Rasher build a few months ago on a Galaxy Note using Gingerbread and it worked pretty well other than bookmarks but a few weeks ago it stopped working. When I load it now, tapping on any options doesn't work and I can't use it. I have tried going back to earlier builds but that doesn't work. It's installed on the external SD card and I haven't upgraded to ICS or Jellybean. Maybe if I install it on the phone that might help.

Any ideas ? I'm not very technical but I had RB on an Iriver for years and it's brilliant.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Yes, you need to keep Rockbox on the internal storage of your Android device, and not on the external storage. AFAIK the widgets don't play nice when moved to external storage. Rockbox itself doesn't like being moved either.

I've been having a problem with Rockbox that is still present in the latest build (2012-10-12 13:12 CEST    be6da12-121012) on my LG p500 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_P500) (320x480) running CM10 (JB 4.1.1) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?s=62fa11bcbec1196ae52922bd1f3e727e&t=1811325). Seems whenever I build the database it causes Rockbox to crash when I try to play a file, either through the file viewer or the database viewer. When I delete all database related files in /sdcard/rockbox/, playback works again.

I get
Code: [Select]
*PANIC*
Stkov audio
pc:5133e6f0 sp:5142e7dc
      A:  5133f030
bt end

I'm trying to play the audio over bluetooth if that matters. Also my version of Android is anything but official so that may be a factor. It's a big pain, I'd like to have auto resume in my Podcast folder.

Even being at this early a stage, it's great to see Rockbox in Android! Good work.

Thus far, I haven't seen any WPSes for larger screen sizes on Android tablets. I managed to cobble together a very crude (read: slapped a backdrop and album art only) WPS for my Nook Color's 600x1024 screen, but I'll be getting a Nexus 7 soon, and I have so far seen zero WPS projects for its 800x1280 (or 1280x800, your choice!) screen.

With the various Android screen sizes out there, more WPS projects are badly needed!

Possibly. There are some 720x1280 themes around though, which should work reasonably well on 800x1280

Yes, I did see one that AlexP is working on, and I have no qualms about losing 40 pixels on each veritcal edge if it means I have a nice looking skin on my N7. :)

You may find a repository of very unofficial, simple, rough Android themes here in various pixel heights and widths:

http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69076 (http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69076)

All credit to [Saint].  I just modified his work.

Does anyone have a recent 800x1280 android build to share?

It's a little anal, but, you misspelled my name. ;)

Also, thanks for picking this work up, I haven't had time to do so for what seems like an age. It is certainly my intention to do so, but I have had to put aside a few projects in favour of real life and my health lately. I quite like what you've done with the placement of some elements in the much larger resolutions.

Nice work.

My apologies, the error has been corrected!

The work was pretty quick and dirty and just done to work out the coordinates for the x,y placement of elements.  Later, I hope to improve on these themes.

It is noticed that there have been no builds since December 29, 2012.  Any problems?

An 800x1280 build would be very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for those builds. It's great to have my beloved Rockbox running on Android!  :)

Just one question, probably I'm too stupid to figure it out but how can I change the font color for the notification area entry? It's a dark-grey font on a dark-grey background on my device and kind of hard to read...

I'm going to go ahead and assume you're not able to compile your own builds (based on the fact that you're using someone elses pre-compiled binaries), and based on that assumption the answer in short is, "you can't".

Well, I've compiled builds für Sansa devices, but I guess it's a bit more complicated for Android!? Can you tell me which file holds the settings?

Maybe I could even help to implement some menu setting for this. In its current state the font color renders a great feature pretty much useless for the majority of all Android users (I guess the background is dark on most devices).

It may or may not be of interest for the port developers that on my device (ARMv9 - Samsung I9100), rockbox frequently crashes (playback continues but the interface stops to react) on Android 4.0.4 but runs perfectly smooth on Android 4.1.2.

Similar - or even worse - here, on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 running CM10 (4.1.2). When the screen turns off while Rockbox is the visible app, the screen can't be turned on anymore, the tablet has to be rebooted. Same happened on CM9 (4.0.x) too.

dkft,

The problem you describe has been a problem since CM9 (or maybe before).  Look in CM10 display settings and check the "volume wakes screen" or something like that.  Then the volume control can then wake the device.

I'm not convinced that it's a Rockbox problem (not yet anyway).  I have *never* seen the problem with a commercial, stock Android build whether it be GB, HC or ICS.  I have only seen it with CM and it happens with CM on various devices: Samsung Epic 4G Touch (SGSII), Samsung Exhilarate (i577), Samsung Captivate (SGS).  Maybe it's a Samsung problem.

Even on devices with stock, nearly unskinned Android ICS such as the Toshiba Excite 7.7 or the Lenovo Thinkpad there is no problem.

On the other hand, I've never seen the problem with other media players on CM9 or CM10.

My TB recently got the newest OS upgrade (now running 4.0.4).
Rockbox ran fine for several minutes, despite turning the screen on/off, going to the home screen and back, etc.  Then playback stopped, and I had the following error screen.  I can now exit RB, kill the process, reset my phone and/or install the app again, and any time I try to resume playback I instantly get essentially the same error:

Code: [Select]
*PANIC*
Stkov audio
pc:###### sp:#####
 A: #####
bt end

I haven't tried removing / reinstalling fully yet, but will try if anyone thinks it'll actually do any good.  I kinda expected a full restart of the phone to do the trick at least temporarily, but no dice.

wow. amazing.  Just installing on galaxy ace GT-5830i. Just a couple of small things

Set default location of file view. At the bottom it says "start file browser at" then click that says cleared. Setting to sdcard\media would be good.

There is a tiny bit of over scanning going on on the top edge, probably one or two pixels. I've used the correct resolution build

You are thinking of:
Settings - General Settings - File View - Start File Browser at /

Which as you've found, sets the starting location of the File Browser to /.

That menu entry exists solely to revert the starting location of the File Browser to the default, which is /, a legacy of the fact that Rockbox typically runs on devices that make use of the entire disk. The fact that it isn't /sdcard or /storage0 for RaaA on Android is perhaps an issue, but...not really, keep reading.

What you *want* is:
Files - <Navigate to desired starting location of File Browser> - <bring up context menu on desired selection> - Start File Browser Here

This allows you to set the starting location of the File Browser to any location your heart may desire, provided the path actually exists.

800x480 is a landscape format. If you want portrait you need to use 480x800.

Rockbox cannot rotate the display. It can flip it, but that's something different. It's definitely not a Rockbox bug. You can call this a user bug if you like :)

Did you uninstall the previous build first? The builds are now done on a different system, so I imagine that maybe the signing key changed.

Do you have "Gather Runtime Data" enabled by any chance? I get a similar error when I set this option to Yes. And database update seems to be broken - every time I start Rockbox it adds the same entries to the DB - if I started RB 3 times since install I'll have 3 "Hell's Bells" under AC/DC.

Request 1: please can there be a Galaxy Note 800x1280 version. On this ICS device, 720x*** version does not appear properly. Only the 480x800 version appears well, though of course too small. But for  display size, this 480x800 version works well on Galaxy Note & on Galaxy Player 4.2 (android 3.6).

Request 2: on both devices the Android status bar is not visible - & it should be if possible - this is exacerbated by the too tiny & unnecessary (?) Rockbox/Cubby status bar. Can this be rectified?

Request 3: the Rockbox "Line" widget is great on the Galaxy Note, but on the Galaxy Player the "song titles" text is taller & doesn't quiet fit - slightly smaller height & narrow font would improve greatly.

Feedback: I set up devices (& lock down un-required access where possible) for non-techies using Database only. On these Galaxy devices, both Android Rockbox database & the "Rockbox Line" widget work superbly - almost as well as the more developed Sansa Clip Zip. Feedback from such users is intense operational dislike of "flashier" players like samsung stock & google compared to operating  Android Rockbox. However, it's too easy to alter settings inadvertently on the Android version - & some "instabilities" noted may be for this reason.
Thank you for your excellent work.

I've installed your 1280x800 apk on my Nexus 7 and 320x480 on my Samsung Galaxy Ace. Bit of a relief really as I've been looking for a decent mp3 player on my android devices having been using rockbox on my mp3 player for ages.

On my Samsung phone it displays perfectly from the word go but I had to add cabbie_v2_android_12800x800 to make the display visible on the nexus.

Works nicely, however, one flaw...I don't seem to be able to get auto bookmarking to work - I've set it to bookmark on stop and update on stop and combinations and for some reason the automatic version just doesn't do anything - I can manually create one but that's not a nice easy shortcut, can anyone tell me if I am supposed to set something else to make bookmarking work please?

thanks

Chris

Please can there be a Galaxy Note 800x1280 version.
There are millions of Galaxy Notes at large!
On both ICS & Jelly Bean, only the 480x800 version works properly on the Galaxy Note (720x*** version does not).
In fact the 480x800 version works & appears superbly as it is (incl database).
The only need for 800x1280 version is not to enlarge text (this is just right on the 480x800 version)) but simply to see more tracks on the greater screen area. Thank you for your excellent work.

As the number of screen pixels seem to be increasing rapidly (2560x1600 at this point), I have a question:

Would it make sense to only have two large pixel (4000x4000) Android Rockbox builds, one landscape and one portrait?  Then, the user could create or install a theme that matches the screen orientation and pixels whether it be 800x480 or 2560x1600.

Perhaps the rest of the builds would be rendered unnecessary.

I think one of the big overall goals was to create a display-independent build for Android, which also features an Android-esque UI, that can then be distributed in the Play Store.

I haven't been on IRC in some time, though, so I'm a bit at a loss as to what's been going on with that as of late.

I lost mine since my SD card corrupted and lost most of my files. Rather than hanging off the assumption that these (third party) builds are going to be around for ever, and hoping a new resolution will be added to match the newest device or your own obscure flavor (not saying it won't happen), it might pay to have a look at learning to build Rockbox from source.

It really is trivial to set up, and we can walk you through it, should you desire.

Edited to add: I should probably note that rasher hasn't been in control of these builds for some time, this thread is running off the courtesy of TheSeven. So, thanks, TheSeven.

Quite late to the party here - please forgive. Am I understanding correctly that if I build from source I won't need a theme to get a useable interface on, say, a 1080x1920 device? If so (and the result is something as useable on 1080x1920 as rasher's builds were on 720x1280) I'd love to take you up on the offer of walking me through it.

I'm familiar with simple compilation of source packages in linux, but have no experience setting up for android, cross-compilation in general or anything at all fancy. Things like "debug signature for signing the apk" in the instructions on the Android Port Page (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort) are a bit confusing for me. I'm also clueless about what would need to be included to get, say, working play/pause, skip buttons.

If you think you could coach up someone as useless as I … the effort would certainly be appreciated.

Compiling the build isn't going to fix your issue, at least not solely.

The reason you don't have a theme is that no such theme exists for your target resolution.
You will have to create one, hope someone else does, or hope that I find that time and motivation to finish my long winded efforts on making a resolution agnostic theme for Rockbox.

It is worth noting that the user interface in the fallback theme on touch devices does indeed have functional media control, it is just that the touch screen is split into a 3x3 grid mode (as opposed to absolute point) and there are no obvious points of reference.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Rockbox on Android had the ability to load a binary with a target resolution smaller than that of the intended host. This is no longer the case. The binary must be compiled for _exactly_ the same resolution as the host framebuffer. Prior to this, it was possible to load a binary for a target with a smaller resolution than the host framebuffer and have a somewhat usable UI.

I can certainly assist you with compiling Rockbox for your device, but it is of absolute importance that you understand that for your issue this is only half the battle, and that doing so alone will not provide you with a functioning (or, any) absolute point touch screen user interface. You would need to create a theme yourself to suit the target device and your own preferences.

We do have a great deal of documentation and various skilled individuals capable of assisting you with this, also.

Ah, that clears up a bit of confusion for me. Inexplicable behavior - I must have been tapping in these "zones". I've gone back and it seems I can get a mostly working implementation with the default theme and just a large font to make the menus big enough to read/tap. Thanks for that, puts me ahead of where I was!

That makes sense. I'd encountered various notes on the internet with references to using a lower res version working but could never replicate this with rasher's builds.

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CustomWPS seems to have some (perhaps most) of the information I need to make my own theme. Perhaps I'll let some yardwork slide this weekend and have a crack at rolling my own simple theme.

Thanks for all the info.

I've hobbled together a custom WPS that works on Rasher's build. But there still seems to be some leftover effects of that default 3x3 mapping you mentioned. If you can see the screenshot, the three buttons work normally, but tapping in the upper right (near/on "charging") causes a forward skip and tapping near "volume" (upper left) produces a seek back on the current track.

Not sure about the other zones, the only ones I had figured out were up down (middle top & bottom) which wouldn't do anything on the wps anyway. The middle left/right zones seem to have been taken over by my own working buttons.

Perhaps I should not have put all my text items in the default viewport? Could that cause this? The only declared viewports my wps has are for the buttons …

Anyhow, I appreciate your starting me down this path - has definitely increased my appreciation for rockbox in general. Do still wonder if I'm actually smart enough to hammer out all the kinks, but that isn't your fault!

I'm not sure. If it is caused by this, the fix is quite simple: Introduce a viewport for the text area.

If that doesn't help you could paste your wps code here (or better yet: open a thread in the wps section of the forum and post it there) so we can have a look at it.

I am wondering if anyone can help me out.  I am trying to figure out how to set bookmarks and for the life of me I can't figure anything out.  I have autobookmarking turned on, but that doesn't seem to do anything, and I can't figure out how to do manual bookmarking.

Our fine manual can...

But, as you may be aware, due to the target status of Rockbox for Android ("unusable") we don't provide a user manual. However, for most use cases, one is able to use the manual for another touch based Rockbox target, the Cowon D2 (http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-cowond2.pdf).

The applicable sections therein are:

5.3 Recent Bookmarks
8.7 Bookmarking

...actually, just hit Ctrl+F and search for "bookmark" in the .PDF, go nuts.

I've hobbled together a custom WPS that works on Rasher's build.

How did you get Rockbox to load the theme? I was under the impression that it was not possible to load themes until the following patch gets committed:
http://gerrit.rockbox.org/r/#/c/1004/

I am eager to make a theme myself. :)

You simply put files into the "rockbox" folder instead of ".rockbox".  :)

I've been given a Motorola Defy MB525 with 480x854 resolution. I had it previously and mistakenly remembered that it ran rockbox. Could this resolution be added to the list so I can try a build ?

Cheers.

Hello rockbox folks,

i used rockbox on my gigabeat an now i own an motorola defy. i tried the rasher build and everthing seems fine. but where can i find the widget. if i try to add a widget nothing no rockbox stuff is in the lists.
thx for help

best regards the pi ???
Judging by this, if it relates to the first Motorola Defy, maybe I remembered well... But then what resolution should be used ? I think it failed with 480x800. I "think" because actually I would like to confirm but I cannot put my hand on the damn thing. (Don't tell me to call its number, it has none as I planned to use only as a music player)

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Rockbox on Android had the ability to load a binary with a target resolution smaller than that of the intended host.
Does that mean that installing a build dating back to that time would make Rockbox usable on a target which has no recent build matching its exact resolution ? As I mentioned just above I kind of remember having used a Motorola Defy (480x854) with rasher's build (480x800 ?) but with my second Defy and the latest builds it does not work.

On a dev's point of view it is probably best to keep up with the latest builds, on my user's point of view I would stick to a release but since there is none, I'd be happy with any specific build that works for good. My best android target so far has been a Galaxy S1 which worked just as good as my Sansa Clips. The much larger screen allowed me to change the WPS and display all tags suited to my needs. As I'm getting older this large screen becomes essential for me to be able to use any player.

I have a Galaxy S2 that handles rockbox for a while but freezes after random time : the music goes on if the playlist has not reach its end but it's impossible to call the app back on screen. At this point I have to force stop it through Settings/application manager/. I have no time or money to spend testing targets until I find one that works like my previous target. I have no time or skills the skills to fix whatever is going wrong. I have looked at the steps, they are just too far for me.

If one wants to run Rockbox on their device that badly, they should likely investigate building from source.

It really isn't difficult.

I don't say that meaning "its not difficult, for me, because I have the necessary skills in order to be able to do so", I say it in a completely literal sense. Compiling Rockbox for Android really isn't difficult at all.

If this is a thing you'd actually be interested in, I could write up a full walk through for compiling Android on a modern distribution using the latest Android SDK and NDK iterations, but I won't do so until I am convinced that there is a need for such a thing because its a reasonable undertaking on my behalf and I'm understandably unwilling to do so if there isn't any obvious demand for such a thing.

Considering what I wrote elsewhere I repeat, I'd be an idiot to say no. So YES I am actually interested to learn to build from source. At this point I havve to forget everything I tried to understand about compiling and rely on your words. So ok it's easy in a literal sense, and that means I can do it.

Yes means YES literally.

Let me get rid of the "buts" : I am not sure of anything below but these things are part of what prevented me from trying to find out how to compile

> I believe I will need to have Linux installed on my computer. I have always been willing to install it but never did. I actually did to attempts where friends who had the skills tried and failed. I mean they did install it but I could not use it properly. With one version the buttons to click in different softwares were impossible to get on screen, with the other I cannot remember. My friends were not able to fix it. I also remember one trying to explain how he would leave allow double boot on my computer. (I do need Windows for softwares I use in common wiith friends, family, etc..)

> I understand what you mean by
>> Rockbox is compatible with any Android hardware that has a screen .../...
> I understand
>> .../... and a minimum API level of 8 (= Android 2.2 & above)

> I have a doubt : how useful will that be ? Let me explain... Rockbox was 100% usable on my Samsung Galaxy S1. It did not freeze, it did not crash, it worked as good as on my Sansa Clip+, Clip zip or Cowon D2.
Now I have a Galaxy S2. The secreen resolution is the same so I am able to use the same build on it but it freezes after random time. (the app is still running but cannot be called back on screen and controlled, stopped)
In my mind having Rockbox on a "mp3 player port" can't compare with an Android device : the mp3 player is a single target, the Android device is a generic target with 100s versions : different brands, different models, differents android versions...!!
I don't think compiling a build will stop the Galaxy S2 freezing. I guess the problem can come from the Rockbox app or the hardware or the Android version or a combination of all ?

If my compilation version for a device  is a 100% usable, fine, if not, I'll be left looking for another device again ?

NEVER MIND THOUGH, MY COMPILED BUILDS WILL HELP OTHERS, I WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO USE THEM FOR TESTING PURPOSES.

> Is it just the build I will need or also the Theme. I have been able to write my own themes but only based on pre-existing ones.
EDIT : in fact...
Compiling the build isn't going to fix your issue, at least not solely
The reason you don't have a theme is that no such theme exists for your target resolution.
You will have to create one, hope someone else does, or hope that I find that time and motivation to finish my long winded efforts on making a resolution agnostic theme for Rockbox.
> Does that mean one Theme needs to be created for each target resolution ?
> What does "resolution agnostic theme" mean ? A theme that would work on all target resolution ?

FINALLY YES I'm interested and if I find it literally as simple as you, it won't take long to achieve, if not well, I'll do my best but will have to consider how much time I can devote to going further !! You must not think that the time it will take (if any) for me to follow your instructions means you will have made a reasonnable undertaking for someone who does not do his best to use it.

Combining this
Internet Archive to the rescue.  You can grab the 2-26 builds (though there is still some bugginess) here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20140227030816/http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/
and that
Once upon a time, not so long ago, Rockbox on Android had the ability to load a binary with a target resolution smaller than that of the intended host.
I managed to download an old build that works on Motorola Defy MB525 android target. In a few days of usage, I'll be able to confirm what I think I remember i.e. it should be pretty usable (not freeze, etc...)
EDIT:  Damn it !! Rockbox just froze after less than 5mn playing time !! Then it came back for a few seconds, then froze, etc.. really weird and not like anything I encountered before. Looks like I am going to have to investigate, try more builds and so on. Hopefully it will work. I'll update this.

IF it works eventually,  That means could mean...:
If one wants to run Rockbox on their device that badly, they should likely investigate building from source.
It really isn't difficult.
I don't say that meaning "its not difficult, for me, because I have the necessary skills in order to be able to do so", I say it in a completely literal sense. Compiling Rockbox for Android really isn't difficult at all.
I'm still willing to be convinced AND I'd be compiling not just for me but for friends willing to try Rockbox on a target with no build available... if the Theme is not a problem though !!

Given your/my work/private commitments, and the fact that the problem is probably sorted for now, it's up to you  to see if and when you would write this full walk through. (If you do it, once again & a last time, remember I will try it)

Whatever you decide, thanks a lot for suggesting it !

Good news :
1- Rockbox build d475dd3-130622 (2013-0622) on Motorola Defy MB525 + Android 2.2.2 is VERY USABLE at last : I've been using it for a couple of days while travelling with no crash, black screen or any problem.

My only problem is to access internal memory of the phone so I can change the WPS. Not a big problem, just a bit of hassle.

2- Rockbox build bb5341c-141107 on Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 + Android 4.1.2 is USABLE too : I've been using it randomly without the black screen bug. I still need to use it on a regular basis for a few days before I'm sure but it sounds good. There again I still have to adapt the WPS to my taste. Good news is it's much access to the WPS file with that phone so I'll be editing/testing my version on it and then it should work on the other phone (they share the same screen resolution build)

Hello. Does anyone have Rockbox for Android (any build) working on any Android 5.0 "Lollipop" build (official or unofficial)?  I see the Rockbox logo for a moment as it loads then it just crashes.  I am using a Galaxy Note 3 with a build of CM12.  Kitkat (4.4.x) changed the permissions for how writing is done to the internal/external memory.

Not presently.

I have it booting in 4.4.4 w/ ART, but 4.4.4 ART and 5.0.x ART are quite different beasts. I haven't been terribly motivated to look into what's tripping it up yet.

Trying to run the latest on Samsung S5 (1080x1920) and I'm having no luck.  I believe I cleaned up everything from previous installations and I still get the small fonts.  Does anybody know of a theme that will work for this resolution.  I love rockbox and miss it on my new S5.   Any help is appreciated.

What version of Android is your Nexus 7 running? Please note that Android 5.0 and any derivatives of it won't run Rockbox currently; Rockbox doesn't support the ART runtime in these newer versions of Android.

On my UMX MaxPatriot Tracfone there's android 4.1.2, and there's a weird clicking in the background when I play audio that is identical to the clicking in the rockbox iPod Classic 6G builds.

The specs for the phone are here: http://tracfonereviewer.blogspot.com/2015/01/unimax-maxpatriot-tracfone-review.html

I've been using PowerAMP because I prefer the equalizer's smoothing algorithm, which makes 5 dollar Koss earbuds with 16 Ohms of resistance and 10 mm drivers sound like 32 Ohms with 11 mm drivers on my Sanza Clip+.

I'd like to be able to get that smoothing in Rockbox if possible as well.

Edit: Wow, I'm such a noob at this.

PowerAmp's equalizer sounds good because of the high Q value done with a power of 2 increase in the equalizer bands, which sounds really good. Derp.

Managed to get an excellent sound by setting the Q values of the bands at 2.0-2.5.

Hi, rockbox runs on android with ART, at least for me. I'm running kitkat 4.4.2, no problems at all, installs and then runs flawlessly. My phone if you want to know is an Alcatel Pixi 3(4), 4 inches 840 by 480 screen.

The problem with ART is that it precompiles the files and opposed to Dalvik, there is one vm for all the apps, not like Dalvik, individual vm's for each app, thats the conflict here. Also some apps won't like to be precompiled.

X86,

The ART runtime from pre-5.0 is a very different creature. In fact, you shouldn't be using it at all as an end user. That's why you had to specifically enable it from the developer options and it came with a warning in tow.

TL;DR: yep, we know it works on ART in pre-5.0, but that's not particularly interesting to us.

Hello Rasher. If you're still taking requests, please consider 2560x1440 (Galaxy S6).

PS: I'd like to mention I've been trying to compile my own 2560x1440 for hours now, and have had nothing but problems (I don't want to talk about them, since that isn't really what this thread if for).

As far as I can see, Galaxy S6 is android 5 or higher. That's very unlikely to work anyway.

I'm running Rockbox (version a8758c9-151114) on another device (Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, 1024x600) with CyanogenMod 12.1, which is based off of Android 5.1.1.  Rockbox seems to be working quite well on that device.

My S6 is running a stock 5.1.1 Android dristo (I don't like using the word "rom" to describe an Android system) so I would assume all would be  well.
