Title: Other OS Installs on Gigabeat S series
Post by: qtipextra on August 21, 2008, 10:42:13 PM
I couldn't think of any other place to put this, so if it in the wrong section, please forgive me.

So I am wondering, on the basis of the development to customize boot loaders and load the Rockbox OS, would it be possible to load other operating systems on such devices which have supporting hardware. Such as a small version of linux, minimal versions of windows xp, etc.

I am interested in building off of current Rockbox builds to create and successfully install a completely new OS on the Gigabeat S, however, I am not sure if it would be possible.

There are no other OSes that can run on the Gigabeat S aside from the OF and rockbox.

If you created a third one, then you could make it in such a way that it worked with the rockbox bootloader, or just write your own bootloader.  Either way, this really has nothing to do with rockbox

Well Rockbox was created, why couldn't another OS be implemented

Well Rockbox was created, why could another OS simply be implemented

Another OS could be implemented, as I noted in my first post.

It looks contradicting to me???

What I am thinking, is since it runs a version of Windows Mobile right now, it shouldn't (or at least you woudn't think it would) be that hard to load another Windows OS on it.

It seems like you're confused by the term "implemented" then. Those two sentences mean "There are no other OSes, but someone could make one."

It couldn't run another windows OS unless you happened to find one with the exact right drivers that is compiled for the right architecture (it's an ARM processor, windows besides Mobile/CE are traditionally compiled for X86).

No, in English "could be" is future tense, while "run" is present tense.  So there is no other OSes now, but you could write your own, and then in the future there would be.

No thats not how it works.  You wouldn't be able to run any other MS system on it, but with enough work you might be able to port some other OS to it, or write your own.
