Title: Video Encoding - for Windows Vista to use on mpegplayer

I was wondering if anyone has come across a reliable and stable, and preferably free video encoder for Vista to use in Rockbox's mpegplayer.  I have tried WinFF with no luck, MediaCoder with limited to no luck, and Super works sometimes, along with a host of other programs whose names now evade me.  Holla at your boy.

Suggestion: Pocket DivX Encoder (free!). Although the output format won't work with Rockbox, you can try encoding the resulting file through something else (like S.U.P.E.R.) and see if it works then.

Or you could install Ubuntu right alongside Vista and use encoders available there.

Or, if the video is also on YouTube, copy the URL and head over to www.vixy.net, then paste the URL there, select the right format, and go.

I wouldn't suggest SUPER. They violate a whole bunch of licenses, including the GPL, and really should not be supported in doing this.

I regularly use WinFF in windows without problem. Maybe you should tell what sort of problems you're having.

I appreciate the quick responses, here are the problems I have encountered.

I find WinFF works fine with XP on my laptop and with the new presets that this website provides.  However, as is also mentioned on the website, WinFF will only work for me in administrator mode in Vista.  And for whatever reason, the new presets that i downloaded disappear when run in Administrator mode.  When I try to encode a file as an mpeg or mpeg 2 using WinFF instead, the file seems to play in fast forward on the mpegplayer.  Also the software is more prone to crashing.

I was using SUPER.. Never knew they violated GPL Licenses..  :o
OK .. I'll try to use WinFF on Windows, but I never knew how to make it work...
Isn't it a front end for FFMPEG ??
If I install WinFF, does it automatically install the FFMPEG encoder as well, or should it have already been installed?

One more thing, the videos I converted using SUPER (to my Rockboxed Sansa e280) are quite blocky.. They stutter and play for like every7-8 seconds.. I'm still figuring out the correct codecs/bitrates required for both Audio as well as video!
Anyone here can help about that as well? I'm looking for information specific to the Sansa e200 series running Rockbox. (ver 3.1)

Yes, WinFF is an ffmpeg front-end
WinFF has presets for (all?) supported targets.
