Title: SDXC 256GB UHS1 Cowon d2 en d2+ anyone had any luck with 256GB? 128GB works!
Post by: parametrics on January 06, 2019, 10:03:22 AM
Hi,

First of all THANKS to all the Rockbox developers who dedicated their time and effort!!! to make such an awesome product!!

I've got 4 cowons D2 with Rockbox ( .rockbox folder) extracted on SDXC.
I use 3 of them with a 128GB SDXC formatted to fat32.  Transcend and Sandisk (SanDisk 128GB SDXC Ultra UHS-I 80MB/s 533x)

The cards are formatted with guiformat (Quick). Unallocated space before main volume was removed by (it happened!)  with FAKEFLASHTEST.exe Did a slow and quick test and Quick settings removed unallocated space. After that ...guiformat (fat32)

can NOT get a SanDisk SDXC Extreme 256GB Class 10 U3 UHS-I
90MB/s to work! when the player loads it sais "ATA mount file not found"

I really like to know if there is anyone who ever got a 256GB UHS-1 card to work on a cowon D2 or D2+
If yes... What type of card was used and how was it formatted?

I know some cards work and others dont. Its way to expensive to buy series of cards and try them out so thats why i like to know if its ever been done.

Someone on this forum, Razorblade, talked about something in the MBR of the card had to be modified.
This was in relation to a Sansa player. He refered to the long lost forum iaudiophile.net

If anyone could help or have some info...I know the cowon is really old but its still a great peace of gear with good sound....help and info would be appreciated..thank for reading

Hello parametrics, nice to see some D2 users. There was a post about properly formatting a card on anythingbutipod.com, which is unfortunately down like iAudiophile.net. But you can access the post (and parts of the iAudiohile.net forums as well) using wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20160708031958/http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?p=542017

I am thinking of putting a Transcend 512GB SDXC card in my D2+, so I am curious if this will work. I will report.

If you want to use the Cowon firmware too, like Flash Skins and stuff, you will need to partition the card, put Rockbox on the first partition and the music on the second partition, because the OF won't like that many files. The second partition is not visible to the OF, but Rockbox will make use of it. Then you can totally leave out the internal flash storage, which doesn't work well with Rockbox.

Good luck!

Hi cereal_killer, thanks for responding! Man.. am i glad someone finally did!  u put a smile to my face... I just now read your PM and i wil look into the link web.archive.org. Thanks  :) As far as i know i did everything right relating to formatting but there might be something i overlooked. The two 128GB cards work fine..tried many different routes with the 256GB but no luck. Might be just bad luck cuz not all cards work? read something like that about 9 years ago... ive tested it and its legit.  I'm from Holland BTW so if my english grammar looks weird sometimes u know why.....

I posted the question "any luck with 256GB and cowon d2/d2?  128GB works" on headfi.org but no reaction yet.
Ok first a quick question before i head over to anythingbutipod...Got the page open...... did you ever use a 256GB card with the cowon?
Not shure if i understand exactly what u wrote but ill get to that later. My setup is as followes:
Rockbox on D2+ CowonRB_2.13  on extract on SDXC card Version: r29508M-110303
Rockbox on D2   CowonRB_2.59  on extract on SDXC card Version: r29508M-110303
Both players start Rockbox by default. If on button slides to lock position quickly after switching on, Cowon firmware starts. As far as i know thats not a real dual boot(u dont get a choice switching it on) get back 2u later. Good luck to u2!!
notice...i got a load of firmware Cowon and Rockbox should it be needed.

Thanks again and keep me posted. 512GB would be heaven! 256GIGS too!

hi Cerial_killer  see prvious post.....

After hours of trying im off to bed now.. The SanDisk SDXC Extreme 256GB Class 10 U3 UHS-I 90MB/s is stubbern .I fiddled arround with MBRWiz CLI but Comman line is not my peace of cake.Manage to do the MBR command:
MBRWiz /list
MBRWiz /disk=n /part=1 /type=CH  (where n stands for the disk number you identified with the list command)
I allready thought guiformat most likely set the right MBR correctly to  0C-FAT32X. I did all kinds of testing.Even put the working128GB SDXC sandisk MBR on the 256GB SDXC with Acronis disk director.

Ill show you some info MBRWiz gave for my 2 working cards and the stubbern 256 SDXC. Its basic i admit but its my first time with CL interface.
The working cards also done with guiformat show no info on MBR at all.But thats due to my poor command line skills....they show as superfloppy with 0 partititions..

Acronis says "superfloppy"

MBRWiz is way better at handling sdxc than Acronis i ques, but my eyes hurt lol..cli  OMG. Is the grafical version off MBRWiz capable of doing the same as CLI?

Strange when the 256GB sdxc gets the state "superfloppy"  MBRWiz shows 1 partition.
The 2 working cards show "superfloppy" only in Acronis.... show as 0 partitions  in MBRWiz

Ill be back  cheers

Managed to get the SDXC 256GB card to "superfloppy" state with "NO UNALLOCATED SPACE" and 1 partition showing in mbrwiz.  with the correct type partitian signature?? 0C-FAT32X

Steps:
1) Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool  quick wipe ( remove partitions and MBR)
2) guiformat
mbrwiz /list   showed 0 partitions. So could not set it to 0C-FAT32X
3) Fat32  format with GParted on usb stick.  (no option to set "flag")
4) MBRWiz finally could change partition ID. see below.

C:\Windows\system32>MBRWiz /disk=11 /part=1 /type=CH
MBRWiz - Version 3.0.83 for Windows
Copyright (c) 2002-2011 Firesage Solutions, LLC
Preparing to change the type of disk 11:Part 1 to CH, are you sure? (Y/N): Y
 Partition type successfully changed
However  mbrwiz /list gave  04-FAT16  and the error message:

Error 506: Unable to read the specified sector from the selected disk

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

Putting the card in different cardreader however shows the wanted 0C-FAT32X

Still.....  put (.rockbox ) folder on the sdxc...  player starting with message  "ATA mount file not found"
What am i doing wrong? think this cards is not suited!

Does it has to be 0C-FAT32X ????

Hi Cerial_Killer

As a test i created 2 partitions on a 8GB card. Rockbox on the first partition and some music on the second.
Rockbox loaded fine...
But did not show the second partition!!!  Do i need to install Rockbox the automated way (RockboxUtility-v1.4.0) for this to work??????
Thanks..

The standard build on the d2 does not have multiple partitions enabled, so to use two 8GB partitions you'd have to add #define HAVE_MULTIVOLUME to firmware/config/cowon-d2.h and then compile that build. I don't think that is going to help with your 256GB card though.

PM'd the OP already but information for anyone else with a D2/D2+, I've been using a 256GB SD card on and off on mine (last Rockbox build / bootloader I created was from April 2018 / fat.c alteration to avoid a PANIC error).  Card I have is

PNY Elite Performance 256 GB High Speed SDXC Class 10 UHS-I   (still sold at Amazon US)

Used this on my Gigabeat F first, then that eventually fell out of favor as the Cowon is much smaller and the battery life is still fantastic.   I have filled it up a few times and never really had any issues with it although I can't say it's a daily driver at this point, more of a backup device that I use at work sometimes.

I never moved up to a 512GB PNY card as the prices, as a few of may have noticed actually jumped in the last few years and only recently started to drop to more reasonable prices.  Although at this point in the game I would probably consider a microSD card only given that it can be re-used in tablets and smartphones.
