Title: e200 Problem - Computer doesn't see it as a hard drive
Post by: Sean Summers on March 22, 2008, 08:47:59 AM
Hey guys,
I love my Rock Box.  I've been using it for awhile now with no probs.  Today I go to add a new song here is what happens:
- plug into the computer via cable
- boots into original O/S
- computer doesn't see it as a hard drive so I can't access my player.
- even the Sansa updater doesn't pop up
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
SS

What does it see it as?
What operating system are you running?
What does the Sansa screen say?
Are you sure the cable is connected all the way?
Have you tried other USB ports/other computers?

What does it see it as?
Doesn't see it at all - doesn't show up as a HD (I'm in MSC mode)

What operating system are you running?
Windows XP

What does the Sansa screen say?
No error message - just boots into the original O/S

Are you sure the cable is connected all the way?
Yep.

Have you tried other USB ports/other computers?
Switched to the front then to the back again - same problem.  Haven't tried it on another computer.

Sounds like a cable connection issue.  It's connected enough so that Rockbox knows to boot the original firmware but not enough to generate a proper USB connection.  This has happened to me once or twice and simply trying again usually solves the problem.  That's all I've got for advice...

When it is connected to the computer it also charges fine.  No probs there.

A few more questions:

How did you install Rockbox and what revision is it?
Are you using a microSD card?
At some point did this functionality work or is this the first time since installing that you've tried to access it as a drive?

Install was fine.  I've been using it for 4+ months.  No probs.

Are you using a microSD card?
Yes.

At some point did this functionality work or is this the first time since installing that you've tried to access it as a drive?
It's always worked.

I just hooked it up to my laptop and same problem...

Not what I asked, but anyway... Let's assume it's an official build and not something you found on lodist.com...

Are you using a microSD card?
Yes.

Is it a microSDHC card or a regular microSD card?  Are you plugging it in to USB with the card in?  There's a known problem with this if it's SDHC.  To quote the Sansa FAQ in the wiki:

Quote
If you have a microSD card in your player you must either remove the card on USB plug-in (you can insert it after connecting to write data to the card as long as it's not a SDHC) or boot the original firmware manually first and then connect to USB.

Ok.  It seems as if there was a problem with the card.  If I remove it and plug in the player everything is fine (read below).  I can then plug in the card and read that also like a HD.  The only thing that is different is that I previously got the Sansa Updater to pop up.  Have you heard of anything like this???  Weird.  I never changed a thing - card was always the same and I have to do this now....

There have been quite a few changes recently regarding USB functionality and the way Rockbox reacts to microSD cards could be in flux.

The computer doesn't recognize the player, even when plugged in, while its running rockbox.

Your gonna need to boot it up in the Sandisk firmware (hold << as the player turns on) and then plug it back.

I have this problem with an e280 v1. I am running rockbox r17290-080429. I have a 4GB micro sdhc. I have tried with the micro in and out. I boot to original firmware both before plugging in USB and after. I plug into a computer running XP, I have tried multiple computers and multiple USB ports and multiple cables. the result is the same..towit..My computer recognizes the e280 as drive H: and drive I: . Neither one shows any contents.

Any ideas?

The first drive should be the main flash memory.  Does it give you an error when you try to open it or is it simply an empty directory?  Do you have Windows set to show hidden files?

No error, just empty. Drives are set to show hideen files and folders.

Unfortunately I don't have any more ideas for you.  If Rockbox is installed and boots properly, you should at the very least see a ".rockbox" folder in the root directory of one of the drives.

I have a weird idea.  Is OF in MTP or MSC mode?

It is in MSC Mode

What happens if you try to add files to the drive(s)?

I'll try that. advcomp2010 gave me the idea to try MTP. I removed the microsdhc (the only way it will boot to original firmware). Swithed to MTP, turned off, connected to computer and now I see My computer\Sansa e280\PPI NAND\"(all my folders). I can add and delete files.

to answer Marc's question...when I try to add files in MSC to the empty folders I get the "Please insert disk into drive" error.

I'm thinking MTP is OK, just an interesting problem.

If you add files in MTP mode you can only see them in MTP mode, and the same for MSC.  It's still quite odd that you can't see the .rockbox folder in MSC mode, though, as it needs to have been added using that method and you can't boot without it.

Interesting. I can see the .rockbox file in MTP mode. I loaded this build using the rockbox utility, so it had to be in MSC. As I said interesting problem. I would like to upload a new build, but if I can't get recognition in MSC, that won't work. When USB stack is available, I'll probably jst do a factory rest and start from scratch.

Weird.  I have never seen this issue.  What version of OF are you running?

running Version 01.00.12A . Without the Micro SDHC (which must be taken out to boot to original firmware), I'm using 7634MB of memory, with 475MB free.

Another hint for the topic starter:

When you put in the player by usb cable it does not show up, right?

If you are running win 2k or win xp please try the following:

- Press (windows-key + <R>).

- Type in "diskmgmt.msc" and press enter.

- Now disk management will show up.

Is your sansa listed as a device?

Maybe your sansa is listed but it does not have a valid drive letter? Sometimes windows uses drive letters that are already in use. You can use the disk management to set an unused drive letter and it will apear in windows explorer. For that just right click at the sansa and look at the menu.
