Title: Ipod video 64Mb?
Post by: Deth20 on May 22, 2007, 09:28:14 AM
Im curious whats the difference between the regular and the 64Mb version?

iPod 5/5.5G 30GB has 32MB of RAM, while the 60/80GB versions have 64MB. You should use whichever version corresponds to your iPod.

The greater RAM allows for a larger playback buffer, increasing battery life.

Technically the current "64MB iPod Video" build should only be used on 5G 60GB models - since the patches allowing the 80GB to run Rockbox have not been committed to svn yet.

hey GodEater, do you think you could upload an ipod video 64mb rockbox build with the 80gb patch in the unsupported bulds section?

I'd love to try it on my 80gb, but I don't have the expertise to apply patch and compile myself

Post by: GodEater on May 23, 2007, 11:45:23 AM
Sorry but no I won't.

a) I'm not about to start supporting an unofficial build.
b) You need a special bootloader too which isn't in the standard ipodpatcher.

but most importantly

c) amiconn looks like he's going to commit the new change sometime in the next few hours anyway.

Patience people :)

Ok so now it s official it is supported, Thanks GodEater and all the others
Yet i have a problem with my 80go, i have downloaded the last bootloader, last rockbox for 64mb, restored my ipod under windows. Launched the bootloader, installed all the file(no problem here i know it by heart with my h340). Yet when i start my ipod i have this message

No partition found
please insert an usb cable and fix it

I verified my partition seems correct(fat32)

Is there anything special that we have to do for it to work?

Confirmed. I get the same problem as carmenm with my 80GB iPod using the new 64MB build. However, when I use the build that I made myself the day before yesterday (which incidentally I erroneously built for 32MB RAM), it works fine.

In other words, the new bootloader works fine - I loaded the new firmware using that without any flags, replacing the one I built myself.
However, the latest Rockbox build itself isn't finding the partition. Do we need a special 80GB build, or is there just a problem with the current "64MB" one?

Would love to be using the official build, as creating my own means uploading and downloading stuff from my web server ;) *hehe*
[Mind you, I'd LOVE some special builds that run nice WPSes, and I'd particularly love one with a scroll-wheel accelerator patch, which isn't up-to-date for latest SVN...]

Can I just say here (hijacking this thread) HUGE THANKS to the developers who made Rockbox work on the 80GB iPod in the last week! I'm sure I'm not the only person who's tremendously thankful and has said goodbye to iTunes in a trice.

I'm using the 2007-05-23 20:52 build, and I have no problems here.

Could you tell me which version of ipodpatcher you've used ?
Title: Re: Ipod video 64Mb?
Post by: peteypiefrogworth on May 24, 2007, 03:06:35 AM
I used the latest ipodpatcher, but I don't believe it's the bootloader. I left that as is and copied over rockbox.ipod and the .rockbox folder with my own build from the day before and it worked fine.
So I think it's the Daily Build that's the culprit. That's my non-technical guess anyway.

I'm not sure how to download the 2007-05-23 20:52 build? I feel like a dummy - I can see the info about the builds on the current build page, but how do I download an earlier one? To clarify: I know I could download the previous daily build, but what about one from a specific time like this?
Title: Re: Ipod video 64Mb?
Post by: GodEater on May 24, 2007, 03:27:55 AM
Again, what *version* does ipodpatcher report? Saying "the latest" tells me nothing.

And the message you describe of "no partitions found" sounds exactly like it might be a bootloader error.

You can't download previous versions of "the current build" because then they wouldn't be current. It's either the current build, or one of the archived dailies.
Title: Re: Ipod video 64Mb?
Post by: peteypiefrogworth on May 24, 2007, 03:32:09 AM
OK:
ipodpatcher v1.0 with v1.1 bootloaders
is what it says.

Again, it could be the bootloader for the other person, but I'm still using the bootloader that was put on there by this ipodpatcher. All I changed was the contents of the firmware zip, which is why I thought it could be the Daily Build.

a1titude said they used the 2007-05-23 20:52 build with success, so I thought I could try that one, that was all. I don't mind.
Title: Re: Ipod video 64Mb?
Post by: GodEater on May 24, 2007, 03:36:34 AM
Well,

I used ipodpatcher 1.0 with 1.1 bootloaders this morning - installing over the custom bootloader that I'd put onto my iPod on Monday - with this morning's build of RockBox - and it went on without a hitch.

So I suggest you try using ipodpatcher to uninstall the bootloader there currently - then run it again to write a fresh one - and then use the current build of Rockbox as of right now.
Title: Re: Ipod video 64Mb?
Post by: peteypiefrogworth on May 24, 2007, 03:48:34 AM
OK, current build works, yup! Thanks GodEater, that's great. Dunno what happened before, because I did exactly the same process - uninstall bootloader, install new one using the same ipodpatcher, then copy over .rockbox folder. Maybe there was a glitch but the current build is AOK.

Now I await the special iPod builds to catch up, but in the meantime, ROCK.

Working, with some wobbles. It saw the file structure and played an MP3, still finding my way around the interface (after not having touched Rockbox for a year when I ditched the iPod mini)

It's done a few weird things, crashed once or twice, and had that freeze error that someone else talked about (can browse, UI works, can select files to play, playback doesn't start)

Built the db just now, and working.

Is it just me or is the sound quality of the rockbox decoder far better than the Apple one, or am I just delusional?

Also thankyou to the rockbox crew for such an awesome bit of software, and amiconn for getting the 5.5G working! Going to paypal some more bux your way soon.

Then you need to update your bootloader (in case you haven't found this out already ;)

I had some problems too, but now, it works.
When I started my iPod, it said me "No partition found, press menu + enter to reset, etc...". I restored it with itunes, and then, after installation, it worked ...
I don't know if it's normal ...
I must also said I had ipodlinux installed, and tried many test last months, to help rockbox developers when they asked... think it must be because of that

As the others, a huge thank to everyone who tried to make the 5.5g working (regardless of the time we had to wait  ;D )

No idea how to do that, but it seems to be stable now. I think it just wigged out, and me accidentally clicking on "Record" crashed it once... well Recording initialises, but if I exit out of it and try to do something else I get the gui work, hdd read, but no playback freeze.

Oh well, I'm happy with it, time to play around with it!

Where did you unzip it to anyway ?

the iPod 5G 60GB also sports 64MB of memory (although that's the same firmware too). I just dislike assuming that what's you've got - which is why I asked.

You didn't answer my other question.

I was having the same trouble with the rockbox.ipod file on my 80gb. I tried first with the bootloader supplied in the 1.0 with 1.1 bootloaders of ipodpatcher and a build I compiled from SVN from the 23rd. When that didn't work I tried with a custom bootloader built from the same source, but got the same problem.

I am downloading a daily from the 24th to try and todays SVN. Hopefully I can get this to work.

I have a sneaking suspicion it is because I am converting from HFS+ to FAT32 using the MBR method, but if that is the problem would the bootloader even run?

EDIT: By the same problem I mean that my bootloader screen reports that it can't find rockbox.ipod. I tried with it in the .rockbox folder and in the root of the iPod. Both times the same error.

Have you had any luck y2kcpi1?

I am still getting the cannot find rockbox.ipod error no matter what build I use whether rockbox.ipod is in the root or the .rockbox folder.

I have checked and double checked my bootloader as version 1.1 both with the ipodpatcher program and one I built from source.

I did format my iPod using the mbr files from the IpodFat32 wiki, but I am relatively sure that is correct since ipodpatcher and iTunes both report it as a winpod with 2048mb sectors.

(I think my next step may be to try to install windows on my mac and go from there. That is the EXTREMELY long method)

I get the *No partition found* error

I have a 80Gb.
I have re-installed my ipod from backup.
Code: [Select]
dd if=mbr.bin of=/dev/sdc count=1

dd if=bootpartition.bin of=/dev/sdc1

mkdosfs -F 32 -S 2048 /dev/sdc2
All is good apple OS boots fine. I then install rockbox.
Code: [Select]
unzip -d /mnt/ipod rockbox.zip

What am I doing wrong?

UPDATE:-

I changed the mbr image to the one in the:- http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodConversionToFAT32

Now I get the same problem as those on OSX *can't find rockbox.ipod*.

Has anybody gotten this to work with Linux or OSX?

You shouldn't need to reformat if your iPod was connected to a PC first.

I had to reformat because Rockbox only recognizes players with a FAT32 partition, and since I am on a Mac, my iPod defaulted to HFS+. I never bothered to worry about that difference until it was anounced that iPod 80gig support came to Rockbox.

If you are unsure which partition type your iPod has, connect it to your computer and run ipodpatcher. When the screen comes up with all the info it should identify it as a winpod

I'm still not certain what folder structure you're using y2kcpi1 - saying "everything in the .rockbox folder" doesn't actually tell me much.

I've installed my 80GB from linux - it's not tricky, just follow the instructions in the manual. If you feel the instructions in the manual as they stand are hard to follow - please outline which bits need clarification, and I'll try to help out.

For anyone who's having trouble, your ipod should look like this post Rockbox install :

/mount/point/for/ipod/Calendar
/mount/point/for/ipod/Contacts
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox
/mount/point/for/ipod/iPod_Control
/mount/point/for/ipod/Notes
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox

Obviously the "/mount/point/for/ipod/" will be based on your own system's settings (mine is actually /mnt/ipod for example).

The .rockbox folder there should contain the rockbox.ipod file, and a bunch of other subdirectories :

/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/backdrops
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/codecs
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/codepages
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/docs
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/eqs
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/fonts
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/icons
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/langs
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/rocks
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/themes
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/viewers
/mount/point/for/ipod/.rockbox/wps

If you folder structure DOESN'T look like this, then you've done the install wrong.

Can you do the following :
Code: [Select]
fdisk -l /dev/your_ipod_device

where your_ipod_device is the device file of your ipod on your system (for example on mine it's sdb),
and paste the output here.

Then do :
Code: [Select]
ls -l /your/ipod/mount/point

where /your/ipod/mount/point is where the contents of your ipod appears on your system (again, /mnt/ipod on mine), and again paste the output here.

With regards to my particular problem, when formatting my iPod I had the idea that perhaps it wasn't formatting the FAT32 partition with 2048byte sectors so I tried adding the -S 2048 modifier when running the newfs_msdos command to get
Code: [Select]
newfs_msdos -F32 -S 2048 -v iPod /dev/rdisk1s2which showed the drive as a FAT32 partititon and ipodpatcher reported it with sector size of 2048, just as it was in all previous attempts.

Still no luck though. I still get the could not locate rockbox.ipod. If you want I can post an ls of my directory stucture here as well.

EDIT: Here are the ls -a outputs for the root of my iPod and the .rockbox folder immediately after a fresh format and bootloader. Everything seems to be in order, except I still get the rockbox.ipod error.

This is very odd indeed.

You must be using the right bootloader, otherwise you'd get the "No partitions found" error.

Could you try copying rockbox.ipod into the root of the ipod and see if that helps ?

Afaik has mkfs a bug when creating filesystems with larger sector sizes than 512bytes.  This was also reported on 30GB 5.5G iPods a while back. And the solution to that problem was reformating the iPod in windows  :-\.

In light of that information, a discussion is currently underway in the IRC channel about possible solutions to this issue.

HI THERE YA' ALL,

If your ipod don't work , you HAVE TO reformat it , even if it's formated right now with windows, also if you changed the firmware it will sometimes give you this problem, so just don't ask any more questions and just reformat your ipod, there is no other way.

Cheers,

this explains why rockbox.ipod can't be found but not why ipodpatcher reports a sector size of 2048 unless that is stored in the MBR and it isn't reading it from the drive itself.

I am trying very hard to find a windows computer with a new enough version of iTunes to restore from. So far it insists on connecting to the internet, which has been my problem.

We've discovered today that you can use the mformat utility from the mtools suite to correctly format an iPod from OSX (or any POSIX OS for that matter). Check the bottom of the http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodConversionToFAT32 page for details on what to do.

I live in El Salvador in a small town. I have a laptop and use it for work, but it is a Mac. The city hall here has internet I can use, but I don't really have access or the desire to put programs on their computers, escpecially not anything as invasive as iTunes. Any time that is not work hours for the city hall internet access is non-existant.

However I managed to get a friend with an XP laptop to let me borrow it for a day and got things working. Indeed it doesn't seem possible to use anything other than iTunes on a Windows machine to get the iPod formatted.

Now things are working and I'm happy.

Well, this isn't *quite* true. After much discussion yesterday in the IRC channel, we did get an OSX user to get their 80GB iPod formatted with mtools in a manner which worked properly with Rockbox. I'll grant you it's a complete PITA though.

linuxstb is contemplating putting this feature into ipodpatcher. Might be a while though :)

Adding that feature to ipodpatcher would be really nice. I managed to format my iPod with an XP machine and posted here before noticing the IpodFat32 wiki change or the above post. I probably would have tried to build mtools or looked for it using MacPorts since I don't currently use Fink.
