Title: Iriver warranty and rockbox installation
Post by: AlexP on September 25, 2006, 05:11:14 PM
Hello all,

this is probably known, but as I dropped my player and broke the hard drive I was perusing the Iriver warranty information and noticed that Iriver are now specifically listing Rockbox as voiding the warranty:

Quote
This warranty is void if
      ...
      2. if the player is opened, repaired, modified or altered by third parties e.g. Rockbox, unless such repair, modification or alteration is expressly authorized in writing by iriver

Clearly it didn't stop me, and I've got a new 60 GB drive on the way, but I thought people might want to know.

Just to get a bit technical, but *we* never alter *your* player, though I don't think an iRiver warranty representative would care much that it was actually you who altered your player, and not a third party. :)

Indeed, I struggle to see how they could justify saying Rockbox could be responsible for any problems people might have, but as you say I don't think small points like that would matter to them!

I've edited the IriverFAQ wiki page to put this info on (don't want people saying we didn't warn them), and I've posted it here mainly as I was surprised to see it at all.

They do have to cover all bases, and Iguess, with the shortage of H3xx's, they need something to say, 'no we will not replace because you have an alternative firmware on, which we do not allow', or something like that.

If I was a business like that, I would have something like that too. Basically just to protect my arse in case something happened.

I know, I was surprised they actually named Rockbox rather than just saying modifying the firmware or something (I know,  know, RB is not a mod!).

P.S. They are even more short of H1XX - I recently broke mine and repaired it myself even though it is only just in warranty, partly because it is quicker, partly because I didn't want to be offered either a H3XX or a H10!
