Title: Presets EQ settings (Dance, Rock, Loudness, Clear Voice, Dance, Disco, etc)
Post by: viggen66 on September 23, 2016, 09:55:05 PM
Dear developers,

I have notice that on equalizer settings, there's a setting that we can load equalizer presets, and it directs to a folder, but it's empty.

Is it possible to add some equalizer presets so we could choose between as per example "Rock, POP, Classic, Loudness, Clear Voice, Dance, Disco, Live, etc".like some hifi stereos normally have.

Already discussed with Saratoga, who also thinks is a good idea on another thread but this one is more appropriate for new features.

Thanks

I still have those presets from an old build on my disk. I uploaded the zipped eqs folder which contains Acoustic.cfg, Bass.cfg etc. which should work on every build as they are *.cfg files right? But I can not tell whats the point with 10 band eq and 5 band as this has changed some time ago. I don't use the eq at all, but if it is helpful, here it is:

If any of you guys can modify the wiki. you could add that zip file to this page, http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/RockboxExtras I would do it right now, but I forgot my wiki login information cuz its been so long.

Are those just the old presets we deleted because they didn't make sense in the new EQ?  If so, you should probably update them before posting them on the wiki.

As I mentioned above, I never use the EQ, so I don't know anything about 5 band, 10 band and what will work and what will not. The configs are from a build from 2013. So if you say they don't make sense with the new EQ I better delete them from the wiki because I have no idea how to update them. Sorry for the confusion.

There are/were a large set of presets posted on the head-fi thread.  Sadly the person who made and posted them got upset at a lack of response and dropped off the site (not sure if its fair to give his user name, seeing as he left the thread in what seemed to be an annoyed state, but, er, think Simpson's characters).  Not sure if the links are still active on that thread but the set seemed pretty comprehensive.

I didn't respond to the guy myself as though I downloaded them I never got round to actually using them as I guess I'm not really that fussy about audio...the standard 'bass and treble boost' of rockbox has generally been sufficient for me (how does that feature relate to the EQ settings?  Are they in effect just simple EQ presets themselves or are they something different?)

But having just finally tried them they do at least have some sort of effect and don't seem to do anything bad (I really don't have the ears to appreciate such things, though).

Edit, I misremembered, its not Disco Stu!

Actually, he still seems to be there, maybe I imagined his 'annoyed' post.

The simple bass and treble toggles can be thought of as a dumbed down interface to the low and high shelf filters in the EQ, there's technical differences, but on the whole I'm comfortable with this explanation.

As for the giant pack of presets, the small handful I checked are wildly inefficient. Unless you have some very specific levelling requirements, just use the bass and treble modifiers to colour the sound to your preference. Expanding the bands to 10 (from 5) and making the precision finer was more about giving people an easier starting point for levelling. It wasn't ever intended that Joe User should be using all 10 available bands, though early on I did give people this opportunity by way of including a full set of presets that I may or may not have ripped directly from a certain fruit named company.

...but, that came with its own issues. I didn't actually bother converting the EQ profiles to make use of a full parametric EQ (seems to be the same lazy path the massive preset pack guy took with the presets I viewed from his set), and many of them could replicate the same curve in full in 3~6 bands. So they were operating on all ten bands which is massively inefficient. Without wanting to add the required magic to add or remove presets based on device detection, the simple answer was to remove them all, though the intention was to add them back in after converting them for use with a full parametric EQ instead of a "dumb" pure gain based EQ.

Hi guys,

Is this presets pack gone? Can I download it from somewhere?

Thanks!

It was never updated for the new EQ.  If you want the old EQ settings, you can get them from git or from the wiki history page.

Hi, do you have to register on the wiki in order to view the wiki history? I know that wiki history used to be on the bottom of the page, and you could click through the revisions. I don't see that now. Thanks. =)

Guys, please can somebody upload some EQ presets?  I found some on Github but they dont seem to work despite them being selectable on my Clip+.

Registration for the wiki are disabled.

Solved, found some here which I extracted: http://gerrit.rockbox.org/r/#/c/401/

Any more variations would be a bonus however.

@Hutchy

How did you get to download the full set?
The archive includes 23 presets. The list of available presets shows 37(?).

I've been noodling around with this, but can't figure out.

I use 1More's quad drive earbuds and it's taken me a while to get the full range of sound to really come out on Rockbox.

I have the Bass at 6.0 dB
Bass Cutoff at 3

Treble at 9.0 dB
Treble Cutoff at 2

Stereo Width at 120%

Crossfeed, Dithering, and Haas Surround OFF
Perceptual Bass Enhancement 0% [when I tried playing with it the enhancement sounded to artificial and didn't create a clean crisp bass]

Without the EQ on the sound was missing a lot of mid-range and didn't have the full bodied sound I was hoping for.

I've created my own EQ Preset which is as follows:

eq enabled: on
eq precut: 110
eq low shelf filter: 32, 7, 91
eq peak filter 1: 64, 10, 82
eq peak filter 2: 125, 10, 68
eq peak filter 3: 250, 10, 56
eq peak filter 4: 500, 10, 70
eq peak filter 5: 1000, 10, 80
eq peak filter 6: 2000, 10, 90
eq peak filter 7: 4000, 10, 102
eq peak filter 8: 8000, 10, 91
eq high shelf filter: 16000, 7, 82

After adjusting the EQ I can now hear clean crisp sounds with full body and can hear all levels of each instrument instead of them sounding 'flat' or each instrument seeming a bit monotone. They now have the full range and tones have dimension!

I can no get crisp highs, full bass sounds (like round bass), and clear (not muted) mid range like vocals etc.
Finding the right EQ was a bit tricky at first. I actually took the Hip-Hop preset from
https://gerrit.rockbox.org/r/#/c/rockbox/+/401/ and modified it to replace the Rock preset as the settings on those presets seemed WAY off and the sounds they gave me were very muted at best!

The type of settings I use when setting up a device for listening is done such that you get the best overall sound for ALL styles of music!
With these settings I get clear Rock guitar for instance, or crisp crunchy high end rhythms like are used in Industrial music. This is great for Electronic music like EDM or Techno because you get very clear treble and bass signatures on all sounds.  You also get very clear and full bass like in Reggae and R&B etc - It's great for Classical and Acoustic instruments because you can hear the full range of string instruments for instance.

I tend to try to push the bass and treble limits while still getting clear mid-range while avoiding distortion. In other settings I often find that sounds struggle to compete with one another instead of sounding clearly separated. When they compete they tend to get 'muddied'. When they are separated they sound more crisp and full bodied etc.

I'm curious if anyone else is willing to try these on other devices and/or headphones or even external speakers and let me know how it sounds in comparison to the other presets available for download at the link above. I personally find that you usually do NOT need a lot of different presets for different genres of music though once in a while slight adjustments can help for things that are more bass heavy but are often unnecessary overall.
