Title: Rockbox 3.1 is released!
Post by: Bagder on December 23, 2008, 06:29:09 PM
I'm happy to tell that Rockbox 3.1 was just uploaded!

For the easiest install or upgrade path, use rbutil (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/RockboxUtility).

If you prefer getting the zip files "manually", go here (http://www.rockbox.org/download/)

Read up on the most noticable changes done in 3.1 (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ReleaseNotes31)

A more detailed log of changes (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/MajorChanges).

Enjoy!

I think you should include time and time zone in the release information.  It's the 24th here.

What difference would that make ?

Maybe in the future, someone, for some reason, will want to know exactly when Rockbox 3.1 was released.

Works for me.  I just downloaded the release for e200, c200, iPod Video and H120 with no problems.

that's odd ... i wonder why?

http://download.rockbox.org/release/ ... i even tried here and it just lists v3.0 and v3.0.1 ... dont even see the v3.1 folder.

im in the USA... where are you located?

p.s. i also had someone i know online try downloading it... and he cant download it either (he lives in Australia)

EDIT: it's 12:03am 24th now and still not working (roughly 5 hours later and still nothing)

Just have patience and try again tomorrow, or use a Current Build. There's really no practical reason to use the release builds unless there's significant instability in the current build.

well i noticed once i used the PROXY (which is located in UK) it downloads the files fine.

but just a straight up standard connection it does not work.

Look, this is going to happen every time there's a release. There are several download mirrors. You never really know which one you're going to end up trying to download from. They are supposed to update fairly quickly, but it doesn't seem to always be the case.

If you can't download a release, wait at least 24 hours from the announcement that it's available before reporting problems, please.

@ Llorean

ok, thanks for the reply... now it appears everything is good now... it's 3:11am EST time zone in USA right now... so sometime in the last few hours it must have came online.... which would have put it around 6ish hours before it was available in USA.

but next time ill remember the 24hours rule after the initial post ;)

p.s. Thanks to all the Devs who made Rockbox possible cause without you i most likely would not not bothered upgrading my old MP3 player ;)

LamdaCalculus and I are both in the United States.  Neither of us had any trouble.

Location is pretty much irrelevant. As soon as a release is put on the download servers in Sweden, it's available from there everywhere. The problem you're experiencing is the fact that the address 'download.rockbox.org' is a DNS alias on a round robin which points to a number of servers littered around the world. When your machine requests the IP address for that alias, it gets one from this pool of servers, and unless you run an (I'm assuming windows here) 'ipconfig /dnsflush' that's the address your machine will use for the next 24 hours or so. So if you've been unlucky enough to get the ip address of one of the download mirrors which updated it's copy of the parent servers in sweden just *before* the release was done, then you're out of luck until that 24 hours is up (or you take the step outlined above). Location has nothing to do with it.

i assume using a proxy bypasses the dns issues? ... cause once i used a PROXY (which was located in UK) i could download the files... as soon as i switched back to my standard connection it did not work again (well the files still downloaded but im pretty sure it was a cache issue since after i cleared cache and tried downloading like normal again it would not download)

but eventually like i said it ended up working roughly 6 hours after i first tried.

p.s. so basically your DNS stuff must explain why Febs could get it and i could not... pretty much ;)

Using a proxy helped you since when the proxy did it's own DNS lookup, it clearly got a server address which had already updated with the release. It's just an alternative to doing the dnsflush on your own machine.

Actually no. A round robin DNS entry is meant to return the list in different order different times, so your client (browser?) SHOULD have tried different IP addresses at different attempts and clearly all three mirrors weren't that slow so even though DNS is a slow technology you must've struck a series of bad luck or have a bad client.

That's correct Bagder, but you (perhaps?) forget that Windows caches it's DNS results. So your client only gets a response from a real DNS server some of the time - most of the time it gets given the last result from the last time a real DNS server was queried. I'm not even sure how (or if it's even possible) to turn this behaviour off.

I think most of us linux using folks, unless we've deliberately set up this sort of behaviour for ourselves with maybe a locally caching BIND server, don't see it.

The behavior I saw as late as the 25th was that I could download 3.1 myself, but the rockbox utility was saying 3.0 was the released version.

Are you using the latest Rockbox Utility?
Title: Re: Rockbox 3.1 is released!

Confusion reigned on the utility version.  The utility download page shows Latest Release 1.8 Released 2008-09-26 and I knew I downloaded whatever was current in late November, so thought I was up to date.

Tried running 1.8 and it looks like there's a new dll required mingwm10.dll, and why doesn't WIndows let you cut and paste that name out of the error message since the first thing anyone will do is try to find it?

My apologies for this. 1.0.8 was released on 2008-12-23, not 2008-09-23, and I just made a mistake when updating the page.

Also note that it's 1.0.8, not 1.8

bluebrother is aware of the issue with the Windows version of RBUtility 1.0.8 but has not yet had an opportunity to fix it.  In the meantime, there is a workaround posted on the Flyspray task:  http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9711

hmm same error guys, firefox reports the following error:

"Connection Interrupted

The document contains no data.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

alternatively, if someone has the zip file for ipod 4th gen and 5th gen i'd be glad to have those files.  i need it relatively quick as i have to set it up in a friends pod and which mite take me a while to their head around rockbox.

thanx in advance..

love and light

Can anyone expand on this:

"2008-12-25: Preliminary support for Ipod accessories."

Does this mean Rockbox might be able to interface with ipod controls in cars in the future? Or does it just mean basic accessories like video cables that plug into the ipod dock etc?

Yes

Video no, that isn't part of the Accessory Protocol - that's the fricking Broadcom chip.

I asked awhile back and was told this would probably never happen due to licensing/dev kits costing money.

What changed? Who or what is driving this support? One man? A couple of people? Did apple give you guys the specs or did someone "find" them?

Probably what you were told is that we'd never get a dev kit, since they're not free and probably not compatible with the GPL.  And we haven't.

Someone implemented limited support for the accessory protocol, posted it online, and then I eventually added it to SVN.

Could you expand on that a little? Will it be able to output audio and tag information to stereo's and cars? I don't know much about the protocol so I have to ask: How extensive is the protocol and its abilities(ignoring stuff like video output)? How much work will it take to get full support?

Does it look like this person will continue in their efforts? Or was it likely just something someone cooked up for their own limited needs and decided to share?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I am very interested in this feature coming to maturity. The reason I don't use roxbox now is that I have an ipod adapter in my car and want to stick to one copy of my songs and one firmware/music management style. To me it all goes together.

It will work with some of them.

Probably a lot of work, but I don't know how much is actually in the apple protocol.  I don't believe anyone has fully explored it.

Does it look like this person will continue in their efforts? Or was it likely just something someone cooked up for their own limited needs and decided to share?

There hasn't been any work on it in the last few months.

Thanks again for the reply.

Why would it only work with some of them though? I thought all devices used the same protocol, so as long as the feature was implemented on roxbox end wouldnt it work with everything (for the supported features)? Also does roxbox currently support outputting tag information over the apple protocol?
Title: Re: Rockbox 3.1 is released!
Post by: Chronon on January 23, 2009, 01:24:07 PM
Think of the protocol as a proprietary language spoken by iPods and their accessories.  Currently, someone has figured out a certain subset of the words in this language.  This doesn't mean that Rockbox is fluent in this language.  Rockbox doesn't understand all "words" uttered by all accessories, nor how to respond in all cases.
Title: Re: Rockbox 3.1 is released!
Post by: JDub on January 23, 2009, 01:31:07 PM
I get that much, I wondered how many words roxbox understands and if it now can support track info sending to devices.
Title: Re: Rockbox 3.1 is released!
Post by: Llorean on January 23, 2009, 01:36:02 PM
Just a note: It's "Rockbox" not "Roxbox".

There's also simple and advanced versions of the protocol, and although they can do some of the same things, they're done in different ways. Basically, it's really impossible to predict if it will work with a specific device unless someone's already tried it and posted it to the page where they're tracking it.

Also, some devices do stupid things like navigating around the menus in the iPod in order to do something, which won't work in Rockbox because it has a different menu structure.

^ I daresay the bug in 1.0.{8,9} was not known at the time Bagder posted.

The first report seems to be 2 days later:
