Title: Help! (iRiver H300 series)
Post by: tomfreeman on March 27, 2008, 02:40:08 PM
I've put the rockbox firmware on my system no problems but i've come round to wanting to take it off agian and hit some troubles. First of all i tried booting the original firmware the way the manual says but all that happend is it said it was booting it and went blank and turned itself off. I tried uninstalling it but the bootloader remained and came up with the message 'firmware -1'. Went back to the manual and it said to remove firmware, simply flash the original manufacturer's firmware...so here's my question; i've got the original firmware, what does 'flashing it' consist of?! Any help would be much appreciated!

first of all: boooo at uninstalling ;)

when doing the dual-boot, you need to hold the ON button long enough:
- press and hold REC
- press and hold ON (play)
- wait for original firmware to boot
- release buttons

can you tell us why you're removing rockbox?

Also, to flash the original firmware, just put the clean .hex file in the root of the player and "Update" using the iriver firmware (dualbooted as petur explained)

Cracking, thanks guys. In answer to why i'm taking it off, i'm getting a brand new nice and shiney iPod and i'm donating this one to my mum and the original firmware is probably easier to use for someone who's a technophobe!

Very true. Rockbox is not the thing for someone who barely understands what an "MP3" is (e.g. one of my friends).

I strongly disagree with that opinion.

Rockbox is way more intuitive and easy to use than other firmwares (like H300 OF). The fact that Rockbox has so many options and settings doesn't mean that it is complicated for basic operations. If someone is not tech savvy then all he has to do to use Rockbox, is just ignore most of the Settings Menu.

Agreed. Rockbox is certainly easier than the original firmware of the h3x0...

yeah but...you would say that! you're both developers!

As a note, my mother also agrees with them (well, in comparison with a few different OFs including the H100, but I'll admit not in regard to the H300 specifically since she's never used it).

Almost correct: I turned to rockbox because I didn't like the original firmware. Next I started tweaking some stuff and after a while became dev... So I was just a user at some point...

I agree that Rockbox can be a lot more complicated than the original firmware on, for example, the H300. All these options and menus can be quite confusing for a user that only needs tape-deck equivalent functionality.
