Title: Tag Cache & 10,000 Songs & New 8MB Chips
Post by: randyami on July 12, 2006, 05:00:35 AM
Hi,

I just recently upgraded my FM Rec to v. 2.5 and found that the zip file and the WIN Install files did not include the tag cache functionality.  Is it supposed to be added separately?  I couldn't find mention of this anywhere on the site, save the forum.  I then installed the most recent daily build 07/10/06 and found the tag cache functionality.  I've been trying to initialize the cache, but wonder if it is working or malfunctioning.  My 20GB drive has ~10,000 songs on it.  How long shout the original non-modded hardware take to initialize the the cache?  I've had this running for about 9 hours now with no end in sight.  The disk light is still flashing, so I don't thing the machine has crashed.  Is it really supposed to take this long to initialize?

Also, I am considering doing the 8 MB upgrade.  Does anyone still have any chips?

Thanks,

Randy

P.S. ROCKBOX ROCKS!  I've been using it 3+ years!

1) 2.5 doesn't have TagCache, because it was released quite some time ago. It would be silly to go back and start trying to add features to a "stable release" rather than simply working toward the next stable release.
2) TagCache shouldn't take 9 hours... But then 10,000 songs on a 20GB drive sounds like an awful lot. Usually the caching should take less than an hour, though I'm not sure with a song total in that range. Also, how many is "about  10,000"?

Ahhh!  I thought that Tag Cache came out before 2.5.  It's been a while since I've been on the website.

I figured that it shouldn't take that long, especially when I saw how big the actual cache is.  5 to 10 minutes sounds right, even for many files.  I overestimated the number of songs on there (Couldn't attach it to the USB for fear of disrupting a 9 hr long process!) and found that I have about 6,000 on there now.  Considerably less than the 10,000 I thought I had put on there.

Thanks for the input!

Randy

Okay, with 6000 songs, you could reasonably expect less than an hour I believe. It does take a little while, but nowhere near as long as you've reported.
