Title: Slight annoying problems with RockBox
Post by: Techno22 on March 26, 2008, 01:40:27 PM
Just got a e260 and heard about the awesome benefits of rockbox, got it working now but theres a few problems.

1. When a song is playing. I go back to the menu, go to music, pick another song to play but it won't play the newly selected song. Whats the deal? I think it's stuck on some bookmark or something. Is there a way to make make my Rockbox not make a bookmark each time I shut off the player?

2. The time and battery meter to the top is cut off by the screen. Similar to on a PC when you drag a window too far down and the bottom starts to "go off the edge". Yeah.. how do I fix it so that the entire rockbox display fits snug on my players screen?

3. One thing I really liked about the old firmware was how, when I selected music, I could quickly get to my destination by either artist name, song name, or album name. Can I do that on Rockbox?

4. Will just any old mpeg (1 or 2) file play on Rockbox without any conversion?

5. Rockbox can boot up the old sansa firmware by holding << at startup. Is there a way to make it so that it normally boots up in the Sansa firmware but when I want Rockbox I hold << at startup? In a sense reversing the order. I really just wanted Rockbox for simple video watching, the Sansa Media Converter SUCKS.

Many thanks for your help, I look forward to using Rockbox in the near futre.

Sounds like you're using a broken theme (which places graphics to wrong positions) or your screen is somewhat moved inside its housing.

Use the database.

Are you referring to video or audio files? Rockbox plays mpeg2 video (and therefore also mpeg1) but it most likely won't be much fun if the videos don't match the display of your player. In that sense you most likely need to convert anyway.

No, and such a feature is not wanted.

Thanks for the reply bluebrother. I have a few more questions When running the original firmware but with Rockbox installed, will it still suck up more battery life?

And broken theme? My screen is fine and the themes I used were the ones that came with the Rockbox installer. Which theme or fix do you recommend?

The battery life issue has been resolved for the most part; in fact, some users are reporting better battery life with Rockbox than with the OF now.

As for when you're actually IN the OF, no Rockbox code is running, so there should be no effect on the OF's behavior.

2. The time and battery meter to the top is cut off by the screen.

Could you try and describe this in a different way or include a screenshot?  This sounds like something that might be related to recent changes in the way things are displayed on the screens.

We'll I just recently uninstalled Rockbox. But basically here's what it would look like:

The white strip represents what I can not see with Rockbox. Changing certain themes DOES make the time and battery meter show up more, but neither of the themes included with the installation form fit my screen perfectly.

We'll I just recently uninstalled Rockbox. But basically here's what it would look like:

Sorry I still don't quite understand what's happening.  Are there words being cut in half?  Things being covered by other things that obviously shouldn't be?  Or does the white line illustrate a part of the screen that is just blank?  An actual screenshot would be much more helpful.  Like I said though, I think you just happened to stumble across a tiny, temporary bug, or perhaps it's simply a misunderstanding of how the screen works...

P.S. I noticed you said "neither" of the included themes, which implies that there were only 2.  What method did you use to install it?

For #1: Are you using the play button, or the select button, to play songs? And is Party Mode on or off?

MarcGuay. The white line indicates where the display ends. At the top of my screen I can only seen the very bottom edge of the battery bar. The display it seems, is too tall for the player's actual screen. So the top doesn't show up all the way.

Llorean I'm using the select button

PS. During the Rockbox installation (I downloaded the 25MB file that installs everything onto drive G), there is a choice to use the Sansa firmware or the Rockbox firmware as the primary firmware. What happens if I choose to use the Sansa firmware as primary? Will I need to press << to boot Rockbox instead of Rockbox booting regularly? That would be ideal since I would only use Rockbox for mpeg videos.

Thanks everyone for your input so far in helping me conquer this beast.

There is no choice in the official install. It sounds like you're not using the method in the Manual, and what you've installed may be a modified version of Rockbox (which could very, very easily  be the cause of all your problems).

I see... allow me to see the method in the manual.

^Thats what I used by the way

And what do I do to make the Sansa not make a bookmark every time I turn it on? That really pisses off because sooner or later I got 20 bookmarks to delete. Never mind figured it out.

In the manual there is an automatic and manual installation, which method shall I choose? Mind you I have tried manually installing RB before and it kinda failed me, wouldn't recognize mp3 files even when I changed folder names. My only success has been with the above posted file, which I thought was also an official Rockbox boot loader but I guess not. It could recognize files in my MUSIC folder without having to rename it or anything.

The manual installation did work good though since I the theme fit snugly onto my screen without being cut-off like in the 25MB installer.

Either method should work. If you do the manual install, and still have problems, we can figure those out.

Well I'll be damned Llorean, it was indeed the modified installer that caused problems.

My only beef now is that when you go back to browsing the menu, the current song that is playing stops. Otherwise I've got this down pat. Fixed the bookmarking problem too.

Thanks so much for yours and everyone's help! I see why people love Rockbox now, the volume control on this thing is top notch.

Suggestion: I really enjoyed having the choice of which firmware to boot as my primary firmware, you think that will become a feature in later versions of RB?

Tap "select" or use the "Down" button to go back to the menu without stopping playback. The "Power" button is actually used for "Stop". This is all covered in the manual.

And no, there likely won't be a choice to change the default in the future.

edited to correct spelling *grin*

Thank you and the community very much for your aid in conquering this beast. ;D

It's easy to boot into the original firmware.  Just hold the |<< button when you power on.

This installer is really obnoxious, I gotta say.  I keep trying to remember to make "How did you install?" the first question but never seem to...

@Febs:  I almost made the same mistake.  He's asking about his primary firmware.

One more question, some of my tracks in the database are "Untagged"

Whats that mean? I right click, properties, I have the song title's filled in for both the General and Details tab. Whats the fix for this problem?
Title: Re: Slight annoying problems with RockBox

I don't even know what you mean by "General" and "Details" tabs, nor have you mentioned what format the music is in. Depending on the format, Rockbox expects you to be using certain tagging standards, so you'll need to check that your files are actually tagged, and using the appropriate standard.

How do I tag my files? And they're ALL mp3 files.
Title: Re: Slight annoying problems with RockBox
Post by: Llorean on March 26, 2008, 07:52:13 PM
There's dozens of programs out there. Google "ID3 tag" or "MP3 tag" and pick one. You need to be using ID3v1 or ID3v2 (v2 is better for Rockbox purposes) on your files. Both ID3v2.4 and ID3v2.3 will work.

Er... I don't mean to sound stupid but could you go over the general method on how to quickly tag all of my mp3 files using ID3-TagIT or whatever software you use.

That's really beyond the scope of these forums.  Plus, those programs are all really easy to use.   Just try it yourself.

I did. They aren't tagging...

Still says untagged in Rockbox database

Did you try initializing the database again after updating the tags?

Say what?

Update: Today might have proved that I'm a dumbass, but this software is decently complicated as well. Way harder to use the original firmware which is why I wanted that as my primary boot. Oh well. Yes it works. Thank you very much.

Say what?

I think that it's time for you to take a read through the manual.

Since this thread no longer has anything to do with installation, I'm going to go ahead and close it.
