Title: Power Hour plugin?
Post by: johnz1 on November 17, 2007, 09:05:53 PM
I saw the post in the Archives about the power hour plugin.  I've also searched these forums and google.

Does anybody have the power hour plugin?  I have GMan's power hour plugin for Winamp, but I would REALLY like to have a portable power hour player.

I guess you are talking about this:

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=1559.15

As you will have noticed, the attachment is no longer there. Thi is because we have a stupidly small amount of storage space for the forums.  It may be someone has this lying around, but with all the changes since it was written I very very much doubt it would apply (i.e. it wouldn't).  I think you best bet is to rewrite it.

yeah, i'm willing to try to learn how to write this, but i dont have much programming experience  (i only know html).

Can someone point to any guide for making plugins, or at least the syntax?

Thank you

I'm interested for this plugin, too. But like johnz1, I don't have any coding experience but I can mess around with things like css, html and the like. I'll be willing to help anyone out with this (like a tester because I have an ipod nano). Of course, if they are willing to compile a build for me...  ;)

I looked into this for a while today.  I'm not getting anywhere.  ???
Learning to code is hard, and I just dont have the motivation.  Maybe I'll revisit this if I really, really want it done.

It would be friggin SWEET if someone else did this...

How? I'm pretty sure that word's not considered a swear word. And speaking of swear words, why doesn't this forums have a word filter?

Thanks for looking LinusN.  Oh, but watch what you say, and don't forget that "d*mn" is a swear word. lol

The forums are essentially "13 and up" (at least the intent for them is, you cannot legally register without parental consent if you're under 13 in the USA). With that in mind, "Damn" is acceptable. The cursing restriction lies both with context and with intent, anyway. It's almost more to define the "atmosphere" of discussion here.

Also bear in mind that different words are treated with different severity in different countries.  For instance, in the UK, damn is not really considered a swear word at all, and most people (I know) would not think twice about using it with kids.  I'm not saying therefore all words can be said to be acceptable (of course!), but some people just may not realise that in some places words such as damn may not be acceptable to some people.

I think that "damn" is borderline swear-word, but have deemed it acceptable so far. If people are getting offended by it, I can consider changing the stance on it, but so far I've really gone more by context than which specific word was used, and by my discretion as to how offensive I feel a certain statement is. I realize of course, that other people may be more or less offended than I. And I realize it may seem strange that I get irritated at masked words when the word masked is worse than "damn", but masking it doesn't change the intent or context within the sentence, and that's really where I think most of the offensiveness of any given statement comes from: the statement, rather than the specific word choice used to put it together.

That's also partially why there's no set word filter on the forums (or more specifically, there is one but it doesn't apply to swear words). In some cases nearly any word could be legitimately used (especially in technical discussion, for example and this is a ridiculous hypothetical, what if having a filename of a certain swear word caused a strange glitch, being able to simply say that word reduces the odds of confusion than having to say 'If I name it the f-word' which may not mean as much either to non-English native devs, or to people who take it literally and name their file "the...rd.mp3" to test).

So, while language use is a bit of a touchy issue, and it could be much more strictly handled, at this time I'm more in favour of asking people to "keep it clean, and try not to say things that the majority would find offensive" than put explicit guidelines into place, or an actual filter.

I wouldn't even consider damn to be a swear word, it has other, non-offensive meanings. But this forum has been going along fine for a long time, no reason the change anything.

simple: portable power hour

right now I carry around a laptop loaded with MP3's, winamp, and GMan's Power Hour plugin for Winamp.  It would be really nice to have it on my MP3 player

It doesn't seem like that difficult of a plugin to write -- not that I'm volunteering or anything.   :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you basically just want to step through a set of track changes separated by a minute (perhaps with configurable start times).

Exactly.  Configurable start times would be very nice (I usually do a random time between 10-60 seconds).  I want to be able to load a playlist, turn on shuffle, and go.

I've made a quick and dirty powerhour plugin: it starts at 20 seconds, counts down to 0, "Drink!!" flashes for a few seconds and it counts down from 60 seconds down to 0 etc.

This is my first plugin, so it's very simple and is only tested on the iPod simulator. I have also borrowed code from some other plugins.
I won't play this game myself (I don't drink), but it was an easy first project and I think it's functional. If someone wants to develop it further, you can consider this a rough draft.

I've attached the source file.

In all honesty, did you think it was *accidental* that we didn't allow .rock extensions, and that we'd simply be okay with you renaming it to .txt, or did you think it wouldn't be noticed?

Patches should be posted to the tracker. Anything compiled should be handled via the unsupported builds forum (plugins need to be built for a specific player, as well as often needing to roughly match the version of Rockbox on that player).

jswetzen, thank you SO much for taking the time to make the plugin.  I can't wait to try it out.  Hopefully it will be usable on the Gigabeat.

Can someone post the compiled plugin in the Unsupported Builds forum?

Llorean: Honestly, I didn't think at all. I just heard about a million voices in my head whispering "How do I use it?", "But I don't know how to compile!", "Could someone please post the compiled plugin?". But I apologize for my thoughtlessness, it won't happen again.
