Post by: funman on June 18, 2009, 06:57:38 PM
Hello friends!

I'm happy to announce that Rockbox 3.3 was just released!

For the easiest install or upgrade path, use rbutil (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/RockboxUtility).

If you prefer getting the zip files "manually", go here (http://www.rockbox.org/download/).

Read up on the most noticable changes done in 3.3 (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ReleaseNotes33).

Enjoy!

i got a quick question...

where is the new bootloaders that are supposed to be included since this has USB support now?

where they changed at all since the ones in my signature, or am i fine as is?

p.s. and Thanks for all the great work to everyone involved ;) ... we finally got a stable release with USB support now.

I have a e260R and I didn't have to upgrade my bootloader for the daily builds off of which this version was based (haven't installed 3.3 yet myself) to use USB, so I would assume (until told otherwise) there isn't a new bootloader for this version.

im just asking if there's a updated one for the v3.3 release or is the one in my signature here... http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9955 ... still the one that's used?

because if your using a old boot loader when you power up the device using the USB port it will auto boot into the original firmware where as the one in that link ALWAYS boots into Rockbox unless you specifically tell it to boot into the original firmware by holding LEFT on the D-Pad on my e200 device.

The current official bootloader is the same as it's always been - the one installed by RBUtility. It hasn't changed yet. Those ones in the tracker are still unsupported code.

ok, thanks for the info.

so in other words... the one i am using, even though works fine, is not 'official' and your saying the 'official' ones are still the older stuff everyone has been using for ages where it boots the original Sansa firmware when powering up the device from the USB unlike the one in the tracker, which im using, which always loads into Rockbox no matter what unless i specifically tell it to boot into the original firmware by pressing and holding the left button on d-pad when powering the device on.

so my question is... is there going to be any 'official' bootloader to replace the old ones (i.e. non-rockbox booting ones when device is powered on from USB) in the near future, or what? ... as im just curious as to what might happen as far as that goes.

not that im complaining as the current unofficial bootloaders work perfect for me so far ;)

thanks for your time.

I think the original plan was to update the bootloaders with 3.2, but apparently we forgot.  IMO they should still be updated.

i thought the new bootloaders where canceled for v3.2 due to USB being disabled on stuff like Sansa c200 and e200 series etc in v3.2 so there was no real need to make any official releases at the time of v3.2, right?

but now that USB is included in v3.3 i just assumed that the new bootloaders would go with those releases but apparently not as Llorean just confirmed that to me.

or maybe there still waiting on the IPOD to have USB turned on then they can do a entire official release for everything all at once?

anybody have bad experiences with 3.3? i had to rebuild my database and now my disk icon on the task bar has been running for the past 7 mins after i rebuilt database so thats not running and neither is directory cache. what else is running??? ill just let it run at night while charging and prolly burn up my hard drive i guess.

edit: so i thought i tried everything to fix my database. disabled the database reset, enabled the database. last thing i tried fixed the problem fixed it. this is what i did.

I disabled database, auto update, and load to ram.
I hooked up my mp3 player to my computer deleted every file in /.rockbox/ that had the word database in it.
Enabled database and auto update and load to ram.
Let that run in background and checked the "View Database Info" to see when it was done.
Reset the device again so it would load to the ram and now it works.

I had database issues with 3.2. Everything is alright for me. And I have the lastest build.

I got a 404 error when attempting to download the source code file of 3.3 at
http://download.rockbox.org/release/3.3/rockbox-3.3.7z

is it not being uploaded yet?

That should read "with 3.3".

ok i see ;)

but at this point i assume it's not going to happen and will probably happen when v3.4 is out?

Why would you assume it's not going to happen? Bootloaders don't need to be released at the same time as the releases, and in fact few bootloader releases have ever been at the same time as Rockbox releases.

OK, in that case it could be any time.

but i guess if the ones in that 9955 page in my signature work well for everyone i don't see what's holding back the release of the new bootloaders since USB is pretty much turned on in all PP devices besides IPOD's for the v3.3 release, right?

maybe im wrong here, but say the ones in that 9955 page are what they use... i assume there going to make it like the older ones where you run a simple .exe file and follow on screen instructions instead of the current 'sansapatcher.exe -a firmware.mi4' is now? (but if this is true it will probably take more time i would assume since someone has to make those 'sansapatcher.exe' files?)

just curious is all ;)

I simply use the SansaLinux bootloader (obviously only works on the sansa 200s) it boots straight to rockbox when connected to usb and I get to use SansaLinux!

I hate to mention this but the new bootloaders fs#9955
have revealed a startup bug, that depending what startup setting is set, the player may or may not be recognized by the computer at switch on see fs#9957

Using a different bootloader won't make that bug go away, as it's not in the bootloader.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say with this comment.

I think he means the problem is more serious if you update to the new bootloader since you're more likely to encounter it.

Absolute kudos to all the people working on rockbox.

I've been absent for a long time but just saw and installed 3.3 today. I upgraded from 3.0.

Great work this looks really good!

It is not supported yet, but if you search the forums you can find test builds.

This is not the right place to ask questions about that.  There should be instructions in the topic for the test build.  Ask there if you have further questions.

when is the new version of firmware going to come out.

Its updated several times a day.  Releases like 3.3 are just snapshots every 3 months of the normal build.

We do not estimate release dates. And we do not estimate release dates. And if you don't want to annoy deveopers don't ask about release dates. We do not estimate release dates.

Why have you replied to an 8 month old thread for a version that is already 2 versions out of date?
