Title: Recording on iPod 3. gen
Post by: krm on December 28, 2007, 05:31:06 AM
I have just installed Rockbox on my iPod 3. gen.
The record option does not show up in the main menu - how do I activate the recording feature? Is it a plugin?

Regards
..kristian

As far as I know (and can see), the 3rd generation Ipod cannot record. Recording is not a plugin but a core feature and it is not "enabled" for this type of Ipod.

Err... I don't think pixelma is correct. I believe it is possible to record on a 3G; at least it appears to be possible with ipodlinux (3G specifically mentioned at http://www.ipodlinux.org/Recording ). Speaking, admittedly from a point of view of almost complete ignorance, I would have though that would mean it is technically possible to record from Rockbox on the 3G too. But it doesn't show up on mine either. Anyone working on this? Or are we going to have to triple-boot...?

Yes, 3G ipods (and maybe earlier) are physically able to record, but it's not implemented in Rockbox yet.

AFAIK, no-one is working on it.  It could be you...

Yeah, and monkeys could fly out of my ... rockbox ipod.
I wouldn't know where to start (happy to help out on testing though :-) )

Start by downloading the source code, sitting down with a hot pot of coffee, and your favorite text editor. Read the source and study it.

The source is mostly in C, so a search on Google will turn up plenty of resources on this well-documented language.

Just because something has the same brand name stamped on the outside doesn't mean the insides are the same.  And the opposite is also true:  Clothing with a fancy logo may be made with the same materials and in the same way as a no-name brand.

I'd also like to add that I find it odd that I have opposable thumbs.

Has anyone learned anything new about recording on 3rd Generation iPod?  According to the page below recording is supported.

Please don't ask your question in multiple places. The DeviceChart page is a list of what the hardware supports. Software support for those features isn't always immediately available, depending on whether interested parties have done the work.
