Title: Help! iPod large sata drive help needed, please
Post by: TheDudeAbides on April 11, 2022, 09:59:26 AM
I have an iPod with video 5.5. I have the iflash and mSata adapter and I’m attempting to install rock box with a 1 TB mSata ssd. I restore the iPod and I can install the RockBox 1.4 fine buy when I go to reboot it says it can’t find the partition. 1.5 cannot unlock the iPod and I have tried all the solutions and it’s still unable to install any thing on the ipod

After this I’m usually unable to do anything with the iPod I have to pull out that Seda Drive and reformat it manually. Then put it back into the iPod. I have not been able to get rockbox to run this time.

So I know this is possible because I’ve had a working player for years but I recently had to re-format the drive and I cannot remember what I did to solve my issue. I believe I downloaded a special installer that was forked, but now I cannot find the answer. Please help.

I'm assuming you're talking about Rockbox Utility here, not Rockbox. There was never a Rockbox 1.4.

Rockbox Utility provides a nice log you can save when an error occurs. This can be helpful for others to understand what went wrong. I have no clue what "unlock the iPod" is supposed to mean.

Now the question is how you formatted the drive. Ipods require a special partition scheme for the Ipod (and thus ipodpatcher / Rockbox Utility) to recognize it as a valid Ipod drive. The easiest way to get that partition scheme is by restoring using Itunes.

For the Ipod "Classic", i.e. 6G there was a forked Rockbox Utility version. That's because bootloader installation on those differs greatly from the rest of the Ipods. Since you said you have a 5.5G this doesn't apply to you.

Please provide more details. The more details you provide up front the more likely people can understand your problem and help you, and the more likely people are willing to do so.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes the versions I am talking about are for the installer or utility, which I believe is up to 1.5.

What I mean by unlocked is the installer utility 1.5 claims that the iPod is locked and it cannot access it. or permission denied or whatever, it cannot write to the drive. This problem it’s not uncommon from what I read,. However when I got it working I know it was long before that version of the installer. I’m guessing probably eight years ago. Maybe longer.

So I have restored from iTunes. Several times. That is always my first step. After RockBox fails however iTunes usually refuses to recognize the iPod so I have to take the drive out, delete that partitions, and then it can restore again with iTunes.

Once it’s restored with iTunes, I can install rock box without a problem however it never runs. It fails to recognize the partition, but the boot loader is definitely successfully installed. Just doesn’t seem to be able to find the partition so it can’t load the application.

I assumed it’s because I am using a bigger drive than what is typically supported I think 128 GB. So I set up a small partition, but every time I restore from iTunes it erases that. I have tried to restore from iTunes and then shrink the partition using an active partition tool that will shrink but retain the data, that did not work either.

I think my problem is pretty straightforward. From what I can remember there was initial problem using Sata, and there was a problem using larger storage, bigger than 128 gigs.

I don’t think it was very difficult for me to solve this the first time. I never had to go into the partitions or use a third-party partition tool. I don’t think I used the iPod patcher. I thought I used a special version of the rockbox installer utility, designed for sata and/or big drives.

So I have an interesting new set of problems. I restore the iPod, I install the boot loader in RockBox and now it finds the partition but it doesn’t seem to be able to load rockbox.

Here is the error I am getting.

I’ve tried different versions of RockBox and none of them seem to load.

I am using the rock box installer utility 1.4 . When I try to install using the utility 1.5 I get this error:

I found my old back up that had a .rockbox folder in it labeled mSata and it didn’t work either. 1.4 seems to install the boot loader but it always leads to that error in the image.

This is a bug in Rockbox Utility 1.5.0. It has just been fixed in git.

I haven't needed to use RBUtility since 1.4.1, so haven't run into the problems that people keep reporting.  If it's now been fixed, will the fixed one get a new version number (i.e. 1.5.1) so one can just skip 1.5?

Incidentally, on the RBU page it says 1.5 has release date 2019-11-15, which surely can't be correct?

Does anyone think the new utility will solve my mSata problem?

I don't know.  Sounds as if the first problem you had was the same glitch with RBUtil 1.5 that lots of people are having.  But it could be that in addition you are experiencing the long-standing issues with rockbox and flash converter compatibility?  That seems to be worse with ssd conversions than with sd cards (seems to work pretty well with sd card conversions now, dunno about SSDs).

Don't know what special installer you used before.  As bluebrother said, the classic had an alternative installer for a while, but the 5/5.5gens didn't.

I believe there was a hacked version of Rockbox itself ("Beyondwind's version?") that had some kludgey fix to timings to make it work better with flash conversion - is that what you are thinking of?

Also, did you then try 1.4 or 1.4.1?  I vaguely remember 1.4.1 fixed something that was wonky about 1.4, but (being a mere RB user and lurker on the forums) can't remember what that was.

Oh, I also vaguely remember that with SSD mods, if the thing went wrong you had to take the SSD out of the ipod and put it in an external enclosure and connect it directly to a SATA port or USB3 port to properly reformat it before it could be made to work again.

Yes, otherwise we would have two 1.5.0, so nobody could tell them apart. That would be a support nightmare.

No, apparently I forgot to update that date when updating the wiki page.

No. That's an issue with Rockbox, not Rockbox Utility.
