Title: Problem in Installing Rockbox
Post by: Equalizer on October 29, 2007, 11:47:41 AM
Aloha  :D
I have little problem in installing the Rockbox on my iAudio 20gb (not slim).
here's what i did:
1) downloaded the Rockbox.rar, extracted the directory into the G:// (the root of the iAudio).
2) downloaded the firmware needed (i tried the x5 and the x5v seperatly), put it in the FIRMWARE directory.
3) disconnected the iAudio, connected it to the chrager.

The iAudio doesn't update the firmware.
what can i do?

Try turning off the device before plugging in the charger.

What instructions are you following?  The manual doesn't mention a file called "Rockbox.rar" being needed.

Equalizer: Don't you mean rockbox.zip? To be precise, the iAUDIO X5 (http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-iaudiox5/rockbox.zip) build?

i meant rockbox.zip, from http://build.rockbox.org/.
i'm following http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-iaudiox5.pdf.
I tried the automatic installation first and it didn't work either.

You didn't mention it, that's why I'm asking...

Quote
Turn the player off, remove the USB cable and insert the charger.
Did you turn your player off before inserting the charger?

Read the manual that came with your iAUDIO, or go onto Cowon's website (http://www.cowonamerica.com/), and search for a firmware update. The instructions are always given with them.

And please use full words like "you" instead of "u" when posting.

Which leaves 2 possible options:
1. You did something wrong
2. Your X5 is screwed

From past experience I'd guess it's #1 ->
Is the FIRMWARE folder really called FIRMWARE and in the root of your X5?
Does the firmware update have the right name?
Is you player switched off when you plug in the charger?
Is you X5 fully charged when you plug in the charger?

I seem to have exactly the same problem.

I have the firmware 2.10-e installed.
When I copy either the rockbox bootloader or the one of the regular 2.11 firmware in the FIRMWARE folder I am still not able to update the firmware or install rockbox.

After disconnecting, powering down, pluging in the charger the full charged Iaudio m5l just sais "IAUDIO" and after few seconds (3) switches to "connected". After disconnecting the charger and powering up again the firmware is still 2.10-e and the folder FIRMWARE still contains the "m5_fw.bin" file.

I already formated the device with the normal windows explorer. I did the same using JetShell (which seems to use exactly the same formating program). When I power it up again, the regular folders are created again, the firmware version stays at 2.10e.

Any ideas?

I wanted to ad that when I try the manual installation using Rockbox Utility I get the message: "It seems your bootloader is already up to date. Do really want to install it?" When I press Ignore he installs all files in the .rockbox directory but no update happens when I plug in the charger.
When I press "ok" it says: "unsupportet install method". When I stop the Rockbox Utility it stays as active task which I have to stop manually using the task manager.
It seems the utility is not able to update the bootloader.
Does this help?

Wow, I managed to upgrade to 2.11-e. I plugged in the old sub pack which I still have from my m3 and plugged in the charger.

Following that I tried the Rockbox Utility again but again getting the "It seems your bootloader is already up to date. Do really want to install it?" error again.
I then copied the rockbox bootloader manually in the FIRMWARE folder and again pluged the sub pack and charger in and the Rockbox is now working fine on my M5 :-).
