Title: New Forums!
Post by: Llorean on August 16, 2006, 03:41:52 PM
As you can see, some changes are happening here. Over the course of the next week(ish) expect to see more. The post counts will slowly decrease in the existing forums as the back pages are moved to the new (hidden at the moment) ones. Then, as we approach finishing, the forums will be locked briefly (in theory no more than a day, and hopefully only a matter of hours or less) while the remainder of posts are moved. Then reopening with the new categories.

In some few cases members' post counts may decrease. This will happen in the case of older or invalid topics being pruned.

I apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused during this process.

Ok enough is enough accel. Next time you use that sarcastic tone I will ban you.

I have already deleted a useless post from you, this is the second one.
Stay on topic and don't post unless you have to say something informative.

Now on topic....

To all members:
We may have to do the transition today, so don't be suprised if something seems weird. We all hope that it will be a swift transition.

Even if there are some annoyances at start or some confusion, the new forum scheme will make things way better than now. (at least in the long run)

hi,

what has happened with "old" posts ?!
for example i was looking to my post iRock for iPod 5G WPS, but i can't find it anywhere...
more generally speaking, is there no more specific forums dedicated to different targets ?

Many old posts still exist but haven't been moved over yet. This is a time consuming process, so we moved the most recent / active posts first. If you'd like, I can look for a specific old post.

It was decided there was no need for target-specific forums, for general purposes. They primarily served to confuse and clutter everything because people didn't realize that most questions (at the time) belonged in General Discussion, since they were about aspects of Rockbox itself, not hardware-specific concerns.

Also: Your post is on the WPS section.

Absolutely, I found it annoying to have to view all the separate target forums to keep up with all the Rockbox functionality topics.

The new forum structure is much better.

It took a little while to get used to, but I think it is a improvement, in theory it should help new users too

The only thing I dislike about the new setup is that I cannot collapse the forum topics I have no use for. In the old setup I could do so for all but general discussion and iRiver ports..

Not really a big deal, but it clutters the screen..

Did I not make them collapsable (they're showing for me, but it might be my admin-ness), or is it an issue of the fact that they aren't as divided into categories (that one I can't fix as easily ;))?

It's the second problem...

I see what bascule and paulheu are saying, as I used to have most everything collapsed except general and ipod discussion.  Now there's at least one forum in each bigger category that I check so everything stays up, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Honestly, I have no real preference, but what's good for the masses works well for me :)

I never had to login again recently, so it seems to be a problem with your browser settings.

Have all the old forum posts been brought over to the new one (if they had to be).

I've lost a post that I was hoping to follow up at some stage. It was to do with the mod format and had reference to dumb (possibly s3m, it & xm). I did not create the thread. The last post to it was about 1 month ago.

I've done a search with and without my name but cannot find it.

Is there a way to search just a users posts with out having anything else in the search criteria? I wanted to find all my posts, but couldn't see an easy way it could be done.

This the thread you're looking for?
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=4716

The move for all the threads will take quite a while. As I said, if you can't find a thread, contact me with enough information to track it down. If your thread is in the off-limits areas still, you WILL NOT be able to find it until we move it.

Bravo with the new forums!

I am so happy Rockbox is still advancing and did not just fall apart.

Thanks to all those who have contributed.  :)

I like it, before it was like everyone was in their own little camp for whatever target they used. Now though, we all have to mingle together, not sure if that's a good thing though :P

Yeh I can see it now, The iRivers brawling with the Ipodders and what not...
(the only two players i could think of :O)

the new forums are terrible in my opinion.

i come to the forums frequently to read about new features or to get help on an already implimented feature. now while looking through the forums looking for help, i click thread titles that i think are for the ipod but are really for another port of rockbox.

if you're going to keep this forum arrangement, at least change the rules so people must post what port of rockbox their post applies to.

The thing is, there's really only "Rockbox" and it RUNS on several different types of players.

For example, when you ask for windows help, it really doesn't matter much if you're on a Dell or an eMachines, or something you built yourself. You're asking for help about windows.

So, I don't understand your problem with needing to find iPod specific threads, *especially* regarding new features.

i never really considered the dell/eMachines idea. good point, in that case great job on the forums and keep up the good work on rockbox  :)
