Title: USB connect as - Toshiba Mobile Audio Player, but NOT as a hard drive
Post by: Lapoot on October 07, 2008, 09:23:32 PM
I have several F series models rkbxed and I have discovered some try to connect as 'Toshiba Mobile Audio Player' but not as a hard drive.

Other units connect as 'Gigabeat', and show up automatically in explorer as a hard drive.

Anyone have a clue as to what the computer is or isn't seeing? I've been thinking that it's a bad connector, but it works the same in or out of the dock. I'm leaning toward the idea that something else is different....

something in the formatting of the drive? or the identifying?

Is there a chance this has anything to do with SP3 as I've recently been updated....?

Is xp limiting how many units are recognized with Device Id's? Some units open as 'Gigabeats' on one computer but 'Toshiba Mobile Audio Player' on another.

Also, when it doesn't show up as a hard drive, it does not load a USB mass storage device driver...

hot swapping the drive's internally does not make a difference. It seems to have something to do with the unit ID? ....?

Ideas?
Thanks, Lapoot

Are you using the dock? Have you got the Gigaroom software installed?

I'm not too clued up on Gigabeats, but I think that if you connect via USB without using the dock, it should always connect as USB storage...

'Toshiba Mobile Audio Player' sounds like an MTP-style connection, which will not be shown as a drive in Explorer.

In the original firmware there are settings for USB mode.  I'm not clear on how this would affect anything once Rockbox has been installed, though.  I use my F40 with the cradle all the time with no problem

The variation in how a given device is mounted on different windows machines does seem strange.  I have never seen this behavior with either of the Gigabeats I have owned.  Is the behavior any different with Bootloader USB mode?

Bootloader mode; You mean where usb is connected while it boots?

Doesn't seem to make a difference....

I do have gigabeat room software loaded, and it sees the units that load as hard drives and not the ones as 'Toshiba Mobile Audio Player'.

It surprises me that the units will work thusly even without hard drives....
They'll load as Toshiba Mobile Audio Player, thus leading me to think that it has nothing to do with Rockbox....

I'm still clueless though....

Update: It seems, now that it's a computer issue. It's looking like USB conflicts.  I've been uninstalling some usb connections, and it seems to free up and correct correctly.... I haven't tried all the units....

Update: Other computers see the units as Mass Storage Devices, Just not my two. Frustrating.

Thanks for the help, though.
