How do I do this? Upload the Rockbox bootloader
« on: April 18, 2007, 02:52:09 AM »
Okay, since I got such a quick reply now I'm going to abuse you guys.  Now you'll really see my stupidity.

I getting my instructions from here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Installation_Instructions

After I've downloading everything and connected my F40, it tells me to:
Upload the Rockbox bootloader (first-time install, or whenever the Bootloader is updated):

    * Copy the file FWIMG01.DAT to X:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG
    * Confirm that the file FWIMG01.DAT exists and is spelled correctly
    * Copy the bootsplash.raw file into X:\

First Question: I don't understand this.  How do you upload a file, copy, etc.?

Second Question:  When I download from the link for the Bootloader, it goes to my desktop.  Is this normal?  They other downloads are in zip format and have their own window (which I don't want to close because I don't know where to find it again).

I feel really dumb and it's probably justified.

Thanks, again.
Sincerely,
Chris

You copy it to the Gigabeat as if the Gigabeat were just another drive. It should show up under "My Computer"

As for going to the desktop vs downloading in another window, that depends entirely on how you've got your own browser set up, so there's not much we can do to help with that. Where it puts them is where you've set it to put them (or your computer was set to put them, at least).

Thanks for such a quick reply again.

Okay, so I won't worry about what "uploading" means and the whole desktop vs downloading.

Next question: How do you copy them to the Gigabeat drive? When I right click on the zip folder there is an option to "copy"? Or is it just a matter of dragging the folder into the Gigabeat drive under "my computer"?

Thanks again.

First, you shouldn't be copying any whole zips. You need to extract them.

On the left side of the page, there's a link called "Manual". Try reading the manual's version of the installation instructions and see if they're clearer for you. They're the preferred method.

As well, yes, by "copy" I really just mean "drag them over" (or at least, it's an alternative that also works just fine)

Freakin Success, Baby!!!
Thank you for all your help!
Thanks, Llorean, the other manuel made a lot more sense.
Now, I've just got to figure out how to customize the main menu because it looks really lame right now (i.e. black and white, kinda beta looking)

It's actually Blue and White, but see the themes section of the manual, and rockbox-themes.org (not an official site, but well organized)

I honestly didn't account for that level of neophytism when editing the install instructions on the Gigabeat Port page.  I'll have to take a closer look.

That is what is so nice about the RButil frontend program someone has written.  It takes some of the "thinking" out of this.
