DivX Support on ipods
« on: April 13, 2007, 05:54:16 PM »
Hey

Is there DivX support on iPod videos...if not will it be implemented later?
Also is there no screen lock feature with rockbox? This is essential to me!

Thanks

1) There's currently no good reason to support DiVX. You have to reencode your videos for the screen dimensions anyway. Performance on the 5G iPod is never likely to be good for video anyway.

2) What exactly do you mean by "screen lock feature"?

3) can you use a descriptive topic the next time? "Support on ipods" doesn't tell anything helpful.

Screen lock.. ahve you never used the original ipod firmware

Its where you basically set a code and the screen becomes locked so you cannot re access the ipod without entering ths code

Such a feature has no effective purpose. For it to be useful, you'd have to risk never being able to use your iPod again if you couldn't remember the code.

What if you don't want people going through your ipod..
Maybe passwords on folders or something..

Anyway a lot of people do use DivX thats why i was wondering..

Meaning you can't watch a movie on the ipod?? Or is that  running Rockbox

Is there a tool which I can use to easily convert my videos into Mpeg and to the Ipod screen size?

Thanks

Just because a lot of people use DiVX doesn't mean we should. As I said, you'd have to convert your video anyway, because it has to be resized for the screen.

The only way to prevent people from being able to go through folders on your iPod is to actually encrypt them. If you want to do this, do it from your computer. If you're encrypting them from Rockbox, that means you're carrying the decryption key around with you, and they can extract it. It's fake security, and if you have any real reason for security you should use better.

I have and its not included on mine.   However, I see on Google that some iPods include this.  It seems like a really pointless feature, since all you have to do is plug it into a computer to disable it.

What if you don't want people going through your ipod..

Then don't leave it lying around.

Seriously, if someone wants to see what's on your ipod, they could just plug it into a computer and it'll mount as a drive.  Plus, they'll have a much easier time finding your super-secret files.

One thing though
Does anyone know a tool that can easily convert any video file to mpeg and the ipods screen size?

More importantly which ratio is best..16:9 or 4:3

It's usually best to use the same aspect ratio as the original file.
