iPod Video totally messed up - advice?
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:32:59 PM »
Hello.  I updated rockbox last night after about two months of not having done so.

Now my ipod starts and gets to the main root directory.  But after that I cannot do anything.  If I try to scroll up or down, I get a white screen.  If I press menu, I get the menu but can't scroll or select.  And I cannot even hold down play to turn off the device.

Oh, and I ask again, can the developers stop turning off speech each time rockbox is updated? I know it's frustrating to have it on during development and testing, but at least turn it back on afterwards.  We don't always have people nearby to help us re-enable it.

How can I fix this, or should I just ipod restore and re-install it - which would be a real pain as I have nowhere to put my 30GB of music at the moment.

The developers do not "turn off speech each time rockbox is updated."  Speech is enabled by default.

Do you have the latest bootloader installed?

And btw, the build gets updated on every commit. There hasn't been any release for Ipods yet.

Hi, OK sorry about the speech comment, but it turns itself off when I update, but it did not do that before (I'm talking about Oct-Nov time) so I reached the first conclusion I could - I'm sorry.

Bootloader? NO, I'm using the original which I started with last September. I'll search the site and see what I can find.

ipodpatcher.exe is not a valid win32 application. I tried downloading it twice.

Any tips.

Hi, I'm running XP.  Also, as a second thing I noticed, the updated rockbox's seem to have the rockbox.ipod inside the rockbox directory, whereas the previous ones had it in the ipod's main directory.  For reference, my last update was on Feb 24.

ipodpatcher.exe from command prompt also brings up the error.

I was just able to download and run ipodpatcher in Windows XP with no difficulty.

Are you downloading from here?

Yep, downloading from there.  No luck.  It could be an issue to do with my windows - any ideas - I'll see if I can borrow another laptop in the meantime.

OK, I got it, must have been being corrupted during the download.  It boots now, but I have some very strange things going on, like half a menu, can't back to the file manager, clicking on 'recording screen' (I have just four options, recording, tagcache, browse plugins and info) starts playing the tracks I was playing before the update, etc.
Need to look at this further.
Thanks.

Update your build.  "Tagcache" was renamed to "Database" some time ago.

Hi.

I have updated the build to both the archived build, and the current build respectively, each time the problem remained.  I have used the bootloader linked above.

What's happening.  I start up rockbox, and the first screen that appears after the boot process has the following options:  tagcache, recording screen, browse plugins and info.  It also has a couple of other options, but the speech is not reading those, only the ones I mentioned.  I cannot access the file browser.  All I can do to access any music at all is to go to the recording screen, it then starts playing the tracks in the directory that I was listening to prior to the update, but of course it's recording at the same time and thus using up the disk space.  I have tried restarting, all that.

As we said, TagCache does not exist anymore. If it's showing you have an older file of some sort. Period. There is no question that you do not.

This means that somehow you aren't properly updating everything. You ARE using an English Language, and reading the screen yourself, right, not reading it in some other language and translating for us or using a Voice file, because you could have an outdated language file or voice file very easily.

Thanks so much! That hit the nail right on the head!  However, the tagcache option is still on the main menu - but as I don't really use it I'm ok with that  I'm doing a complete replace of the entire rockbox directory whenever I update the build so I know they're the latest files - but it's OK as I said.

Thanks so much again, and thanks for putting up with me.  I should have considered the voice file, I even checked that it was there but I guess updating it just slipped my mind.

The TagCache option is not there in any up to date file. Trust me. It does not exist in Rockbox. It has been replaced with the "Database" option. ANY file that has TagCache in it is outdated.
