Freezing sometimes when starting rockbox
« on: April 08, 2007, 10:55:31 AM »
So I'm a new with rockbox and the proplem is: I installed the current bluild to my 5g video ipod. Sometimes when I turn my ipod on it freezes, some image flashes on the screen and goes off, I have to reset ipod. Sometimes it starts fine. I have installed rockbox bootloader and I suppose it's of course the new one. Can anyone say is the problem bootloader or rockbox ? Should I try loader2 or what? I'm a bit confused with all these bootloaders and versions.

Update:
It looks like that image that flashes is battery with warning triangle, then ipod hangs.  But this keeps coming occassionally even when battery isn't low.

I have the same issue and it's been like this for a while now. Usually it happens when the battery is around 80% (almost full). I have to Menu+Select reset the ipod and Rockbox boots normally after that.

Do you have rockbox bootloader or iploader2? I try to find out does it help if i changer to loader2. Ipodloader2 seems to be bit harder to install, so i dont install it unless it fixes the problem.

Yes this same thing happens to me on my Ipod Photo

it seems to be a problem with the way Rockbox preforms a shutdown. The modified bootloader thinks that it is a forced shutdown due to low battery. But if you use the Loader2 this problem doesnt seem to happen

NOTE: If you use Loader2 you will need to use the experimental build due to changes in the way rockbox accesses the PP core. I would advice not preforming the manual patch unless you know what you are doing.

Out of curiosity: What evidence do you have that it has ANYTHING to do with how Rockbox shuts down?

The low battery message happens before Loader2 or the Rockbox bootloader, and can have nothing to do with which one of those is installed.

In case something goes wrong, how can loader2 be uninstalled? I have seen instruction to install it but what if  I want to uninstall it.

@ Llorean
i have had a look at the source for the rockbox project and it seems that the method used to shutdown the iPod is more of a forced power off than anything. On the other hand last time i looked at the source was back in nivember of 2006. So im sure some things have changed a little bit

@ Yari
So i dont get in trouble. Rockbox does not officially offer support for loader2. With that said it all depends on the method of installation used if you used the iPod Linux Instaler2 then you should be fine as long as you made a backup of the firmware partition. If you used a more advanced approach like the manual installation or iPodApplicationManager then they best bet would be to restore your iPod using iTunes of the iPod Update utility. Again to keep me out of trouble "Make sure all data on your iPod is backed up before preforming a restore."

Again, just because Rockbox shuts down in this way, what evidence do you have that that causes the power up problem?

You responded not by showing any evidence but by saying "I know how Rockbox shuts down." So what? What bootloader thinks it's a forced shutdown? Are you suggesting OUR bootloader thinks it's a forced shutdown?

My point is that your statement regarding it shutting down and some "modified bootloader" (we don't modify anything, we add a second bootloader that gets loaded after the main one, which is the one that causes the problem, and also the one that is NEVER MODIFIED, regardless of whether you install Loader2 or the Rockbox loader) is mostly nonsensical. You claim that how Rockbox shuts down causes a problem with another piece of software, and that the fix is to replace a different piece of software that doesn't actually interact in the chain of events you claim is the problem.

So I repeat: What evidence do you have?
