Sometimes all my settings get cleared
« on: April 07, 2007, 01:04:42 PM »
Sometimes I will turn on my ipod 5.5g and all my settings are gone.  Songs now fade on pause, my theme is back to default, everything else has returned too.  Is there a button I am pressing on startup or something that does this? I saw it say the word "Cleared" in the middle of the screen yesterday when I started it up.  Any clarification here? Thankyou.

If you have the "hold" button on while Rockbox is loading, it will clear your settings.

that is a non-sense feature.. i think.. maybe if you had the rec button or something like that.. but the HOLD button?

Well, the iPods don't have a record button.

If the hold is on, there's no way to turn on the player.... so it's not like it can happen by accident.

OTOH, the conflict with the bootloader's use of hold is somewhat problematic, IMHO.

As mikeage noted, there is no rec button on the ipod, but thanks for your thoughtful insight.   ::)

Why would you ever want to clear your settings like that? Wouldnt it make more sense to be in System -> Reset to Original state

I'm sorry but I always leave the hold button on, and as soon as my ipod turns on I have it so it should auto start music and I switch it on pretty much immediately.

I know rockbox isnt meant to suit my own needs but is this something other people experience as a hassle?

It seems silly, I agree, but if you just save your configuration settings when it DOES happen it's a simple fix.  ;D

What if you have a auto-resume on a song that crashes the iPod? This way, as soon as the iPod starts, everything is reset.

I agree, though, that it might be nice to allow people to put the hold on almost immediately as soon as it _starts_ booting, as opposed to when it finishes booting.

I assume the reason hold was used is that it's foolproof; as opposed to someone not holding another button for long enough. Perhaps, however, there's another reason...

You can reset settings from within Rockbox, however leaving aside the argument over which button should be used for a moment, there are very good reasons to be able to reset settings on start-up.  Off the top of my head:

a) As mikeage said, auto-resume turned on but for some reason this crashes - maybe you have deleted the file since (actually Rockbox should cope with this, but you never know) or for some reason the resume information got corrupted and you get into a never ending restart/crash cycle?

b)  The background and foreground colours get set to the same thing, or you have a black backdrop, select a different theme with black font but the theme doesn't correctly clear the backdrop, so now you can't see the menu to reset from within rockbox.

c)  Some other setting gets corrupted so that you get a crash or startup

d)  You are blind and want a sure fire to reset all settings in case voice has messed up and you need a 'fresh' install for someone to help talk you through key presses.

e)  It is an additional way of resetting so you can be sure all values are default for troubleshooting/bug finding.

Is there anyway I, personally not having any of these problems, can shut this feature off?

Not that I know of, besides I think BigBambi just explained why you wouldn't want the clear settings feature turned off.

If you use the newest bootloader, Rockbox boots into the original firmware if hold is on. You have to intentionally turn hold on AFTER the bootloader checks it, but BEFORE Rockbox is booted and checks it.

Seriously, it's very hard to do with the most recent bootloader. Under what circumstances are you doing this regularly enough that it's actually causing you a problem significant enough that you want to remove the possibility of recovering an iPod that locks up instantly on boot?

By editing the bootloader source code, compiling your own then patching your iPod with it.

How do you know you won't suffer from any of these problems?  Just because you haven't hitherto doesn't mean you won't.  I think removing them would be foolish of you, but if you really want to feel free to dig into the code, that's the beauty of open source.

Yeah, but those problems are so rare that, if it DOES happen, you can just connect rockbox to your computer and get rid of the config file.

And if you aren't near a computer?  If you accidentally reset settings and have a cfg saved, easy fix whatever the circumstances.  If you get a startup problem and aren't near a computer (say at the start of a trip), you can't reset until you are back near a computer.  Either way, you are free to do as you wish, I was just pointing out why I think it is a valuable feature, and as I'm pretty damn sure the devs agree with me, don't plan on it going anywhere soon.
