Codec Error / Incompatible Version errors for everything

Hello, I have always installed rockbox builds using the 'daily builds', probably once a week, by simply unzipping the zip file of the .rockbox folder into my F: directory (my toshiba gigabeat F20, via usb) and everything sorts itself out, and it's always been nice and perfect. However yesterday after I installed the latest daily build and tried playing some music I got a Codec Error. I got this for every song I tried to play. I also get the Incompatible Version error for any plugin I try to run (chess, gameboy). Everything was working perfectly before I tried this latest install.

I have a lot of work to do around here and my music takes the edge off, so any help is greatly appreciated! If this isn't the right forum for some reason (maybe since it was working perfectly before..?) then please point me to the right forum.

*edit: Forgot to mention, I tried going back to thursday's daily build and to March 30th daily build and neither of them work either..

What do you mean exactly by this? You need to extract the complete contents of the zip file to your player, not only a file. If you extract only parts of the player the most common error is the "codec error" (and "incompatible version" for plugins).

Yeah bluebrother is right. Also, make sure you switch the battery switch off and back on. Sometimes it seems really pointless but it can make all the difference.

That shouldn't do anything with rockbox. Rockbox completely shuts down the player. Shutting down rockbox should be the same as flipping the battery switch, unless something went wrong with the shutdown.

But yea, make sure you extract and overwrite everything, if that still doesn't work delete your .rockbox folder and start over again.

I know I need to extract the complete contents.. the only folder is called .rockbox or something to that effect, and within that are all the directories and files, so when I unzip the entire file to my F: drive, it prompts me to overwrite all the files (to which I say Yes to All), and I can see things like codecs etc. being rewritten.. looking in the rockbox folder on my player, the codecs from March 30 are there from the last try I did using that daily build. Also I tried turning off the battery and turning it on again, it doesn't do anything (thanks for the suggestion though).

At this very second I am going to try deleting my .rockbox folder altogether, that seems like the best bet. . . . . . . . . ok so I backed up the folder to my pc hd so that I can retrieve my doom and other files.. deleted the .rockbox folder on my Gigabeat... extracted the .rockbox folder (and EVERYTHING in it, to be clear.. I'm checking now and the actual codecs folder has all the codecs in it).. trying to play a song.. "Codec Error", next song same thing.. trying a different folder, same thing.. turned off the battery. Turned it on and I'm still getting the same errors. I noticed a winamp xml file that was only put there recently when I plugged my gigabeat in while using winamp, deleted it, but it didn't change anything. So I really have no idea at this point, what could be wrong..

No one else seems to be complaining so it couldn't be a problem with the actual build..

The rockbox.gigabeat file should have been replaced when you replaced the rest of the build.  If it was not, that explains your problem.

Hah, you're right, and it had been replaced when I went to look in my gigabeat.. didn't quite know what to do so I went to the wiki, and I found the latest 'bootloader' and I never knew that these were developed as well.. so I replaced my Feb. whatever one with the newest one and amazingly everything works now!

I just wonder why it's not as obvious that you have to install a new bootloader? I wouldn't have known unless I had this problem.

Bootloaders don't change that often.  You just have to keep a watchful eye on things.  

If you haven't updated your build in a while, you should probably check to see if the bootloader has changed before you load the new code.

I'm trying to think of a good way to alert at least the Gigabeat users.  Would a post in the Announcements board suffice or something in bold on the Wiki.  (eg. "Latest Bootloader has a date stamp of X.")  That way everyone can just go to the port page and see it somewhere at the top and decide whether you should update.

Wiki is probably best.  Oh wait, something like that is already there.
So yeah, just check the bootloader date stamp before uploading new builds.

Hopefully there will only be one or two bootloader changes left to make, ever. Changes should be VERY rare, though the addition of the bootsplash means we have to post an additional version when that gets removed.

It's necessary when you update FWIMG01.DAT and once I had codec errors like crazy and they wouldn't go away until I turned off the battery switch off and back on. Doesn't make any sense to me either.
