Iaudio X5: How to get rid of the hard-disk/line-in interference?
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:57:45 AM »
Hello,

I thought that there might be some technically versed people around here so here goes:
As you know (or not), the hard disk spinups of the X5 can be heard even in line-in recordings. In my experience, it happens every 60–65 seconds, although other people seem to have different experiences regarding the interval.
Anyway, I wondered if there isn’t a way to prevent this. Assuming it is an electromagnetical interference (dunno!), shouldnt it be possible to disassemble the whole thing and add something like a shielding foil, between interfering components?
I’m not technically skilled at all so I hope someone can clarify things for me.

Oh and another question out of technical ignorance:
Why does the hard disk actually have to spin up periodically?

One reason would be to save the sound -> data -> you are recording.

Are you suggesting you'd prefer the disk to be spinning all the time while you're recording ?

I have no idea how hard disks work so I wouldn’t know if it is possible for a hard disk to be spinning all the time at a lower speed (and maybe hence less notable artefacts in the recording) with the same overall power consumption.

HDs operate at constant speed.  Thats why they're refered to as 3600 RPM, 4200 RPM, or 15000 RPM devices.

I see. So what is actually happening then when the audible interference occurs?
