CF Cards to replace microdrives?
« on: April 01, 2007, 06:19:29 PM »
This may be a silly idea, but is it possible to use a CF card to replace the hard drive in certain players (such as the gigabeat)? are the pin configurations the same?
Flash memory can save a lot of battery... especially when you don't need all 40 gigs on your player

It is possible in the Ipod mini (already tried that myself ;-) You need a slightly modified build though. Don't know about other players but the microdrive used in the mini has exactly the same pin configuration as CF cards. There is information about this in the wiki at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/MiniCF

Thanks
Does anyone know if it's possible on larger 1.8' hard drives?

Someone seems to be working on CF cards in iPods:

If it works for 5Gs I'm SO there.

That would be great for battery life. Wonder if it is possible in the H120 (ignoring size difference and cost).

If you've got a h120 why not go for a ssd?
They are drop-in replacements for normal hdds...
As soon as a 64gb 1,8" ssd is released for a humane price (sub $350) i'm buying it and putting it in my Iaudio x5.

Same here as well. If the iriver or iAudio units don't support 48-bit LBA, then I guess a 128-GiB SSD would be the best one we could put in our units so far (as anyone tried hooking up a larger-than-128-GiB drive to the units just to see if they could theoretically run?).
