h100 turn off headphone out?

Just wondering if the headphone out on the iriver h100 series is turned off if the headphones are not plugged in. Plugging them in slowly, it seems like it is always on, but I don't know for sure. Could save power according to the chip manual. Is this something that rockbox controls or does the chip turn the headphone out on or off depending on whether anything is plugged in?
If it could save power, a manual option to turn off the headphone out could be useful.
