Suggestions for Further Menu Improval
« on: March 29, 2007, 03:10:25 PM »
Hi,

I think that the main menu's (and also the sub-menus') usability can still be considerably improved by grouping related items and simplifying the names of the entries. Some of the sub-menus still are very disordered, in my humble opinion.

One example suggestion for an improved underlying structure of the main menu: Two entries for music management followed by two entries for applications followed by two entries for configuration. I also simplified the names because I think the menu looks much more cleary with one-word entries without losing much of its explanatory power:

Playlists
Bookmarks
Plugins
Recording
Sound Settings
General Settings

'Manage Settings', 'Info' and 'Recording Settings' should be turned into sub-menus of 'General Settings'.

And do we really need 'Themes' here? They can already be changed from the settings menu and most people won't do it very often.

I'm willing to work on the sub-menus as well, but I've got lots of work to do at the moment and so I'll only do it if I get some feedback that those who are responsible will seriously consider it. Otherwise I'd rather spend my spare time with my wife ;) :D

Regards,
Alfred

Are you working from the new main menu system?  It looks like you are working from the old menu system.  The current main menu is structured as follows:

Rockbox
-Recent Bookmarks
-Files
-Database
-Resume Playback
-Settings
-Recording
-Playlist
-Plugins
-System

Oh no!  ::)

I update Rockbox very irregularly and switched to Senab's latest version two days ago. The menus are quite different from those I had before (2 months old), so I thought those were the new menus everybody is talking about...  :-[ I'll have to take a closer look at the latest builds. Hopefully I can do it this weekend... Sorry!

Alfred

edit: argh. senab's build is older than i thought, i'll swith to evilg's asap.

When discussing such things, please verify at least with a current official build the official behaviour. Unsupported builds sometimes change quite a lot ...
