windows formatted nano / disk mode?

1. I had rockbox installed. Went to plug into my laptop, and it said the drive wasn't formatted. So I formatted using windows (not sure what i was thinking).
2. before booting, i put the rockbox software back on the ipod and also reflashed the bootloader
3. Now, when booting the ipod, I hit the apple screen.
4. I cannot get it to load into disk mode (tried repeatedly, holding down for up to 60 seconds after resetting).
5. when i flip the hold switch, i can see that rockbox is installed because it tells me how to enter diskmode. but, as per #4, i've tried repeatedly with no luck.
Did formatting the ipod using windows mess it up, or can someone guide me as to another way to get to disk mode or some way to get this thing working again?
I have a 1st gen 2GB nano.

It's possible you formatted FAT instead of FAT32, check which it is. It needs to be FAT32.

i'm not sure which one i chose :( .
in either case now, windows can't see it.

This won't be exactly helpful, but I got the same thing on my nano, and I formatted it. Luckily I restored it via iTunes before I rebooted the nano.
Is there something up with Rockbox that can make it look unformatted to Windows? When mine did it, Rockbox and linux could still see the files just fine.

No. Rockbox isn't even running when your Ipod is plugged into the PC (since Rockbox on the Ipod doesn't have USB support). Any problems you have with USB mode are Apple's fault.
