mpegplayer
« on: March 27, 2007, 11:51:23 AM »
I just wanted to say that the work being done to improve mpegplayer right now is pretty exciting. Rebuffering and A/V sync is certainly a big step. I haven't managed to try out the new improvements as I'm trying to get Linux set up on my computer, do homework, build rockbox, be generally distracted.

Anyone been giving mpeg's a go on Rockbox? How is the quality/framerate/sync etc?

thanks, markun. I have an Ipod Video so that is the player I'm most interested in but, I'm looking for more of a subjective opinion and just to see how many people are using mpegplayer, how often, on which DAP, and their opinion of it. Obviously mpeg is going to be best on Gigabeats because of their beastly 300MHz processors.

 :D
The ipod does seem to be the most lacking player of all (although I am happy with Rockbox on the ipod) . After using rockbox and seeing what DAP's are supported I'd have to say that if given the chance to trade, I'd go for a Gigabeat, they've got power, and the rotation patch means that all the ipod WPS's can be used too.

I can watch full TV shows and movies at good quality and framerate on my Gigabeat.

On my iPod Nano, I can get the same equivalent video quality (the screen is much smaller, so the resolution and bitrate needed are much smaller for the same apparent visible quality) but because of the battery life, I don't expect to get more than about an hour of video out of it. (For reference, the my Gigabeat can get a bit over 4 hours of 320x240 25fps 600kbps video with 128kbps audio)
