« on: March 25, 2007, 10:42:46 PM »
HI, im kinda newbish on rockboy. how do i make the rockboy play faster? the games are laggy and the sound is off. Is it because rockboy does not have the ability to run at a certain speed yet? I have a 60GB ipod. TY and sry for the bother.

Please read our forum guidelines before posting again. We require that you use real words, not things like "sry" and "ty". Also there is no reason to post topics in all caps.

Yes, Rockbox needs quite a bit of optimization still.

Rockboy is slow and will continue to be so until the core is written in assembler or a fast dynarec is implemented. Both of these are major tasks and no developer has expressed a great deal of interest in doing either since Rockboy is hardly a priority.

You may wish to give iBoy in iPodLinux a try. Their version uses an assembler core and is quite fast, however implementing these changes in Rockboy is not straight forward since the two projects have grown in their separate ways. Luckily for iPod owners, our bootloader can already boot iPodLinux so you have the option of trying out iBoy.

wait, that boot loader can boot into linux? I used to have Ipodlinux, but i got rid of it because i had no extension2 support anywhere, and they're not very straightforward about stuff like that. but i got rid of it

I hate ipodlinux.  It would be sweet though if some very kind programmer with talent would take up the task of rockboy optimization it would make the whole rockbox experience much better.

I'm curious, how would optimizing Rockboy make audio playback better? Or do you mean to say that the "whole" experience to you is "Just playing gameboy games"?

No i mean like that i would enjoy rockbox just a little bit more if rockboy was speeded up.  No doubt it is a key feature of rockbox.

On the whole, no, Rockboy is not a key feature. It's not a core focus, and it'll get worked on if someone wants to, but it's not one we feel, as a whole, there's a lot of desire on our side to improve when so much work can be done on actual core features such as voice support and audio playback.
