%format "fmt_title"       "%s" title
%format "fmt_album"    "%s [YEAR]" album
#...
"Artist"   -> artist   -> album = "fmt_album" -> title = "fmt_title"

I get:

The Beatles > Revolver [YEAR] > Taxman

so it seems to work

FTR, this no longer works. (RB Sansa Fuze+ sim, 2013-04-01)

Can you be a bit more explicit about what exactly doesn't work?

If I understand the thread and the quoted code correctly, you would get a literal  "Revolver [YEAR]" in the display, not showing the value of the year tag. If you don't get that then something is really broken - I just got the impression that you expected the actual year to be displayed there which didn't even happen back then.

If you read jrt's and the followup post thoroughly then you'll see that they couldn't achieve the probably more desired result of the two.
And another thing: in my eyes it doesn't make sense to dig up age old threads.

What doesn't work is the code I quoted. It doesn't give the output shown.

I don't. I get nothing - suggesting a reject.

I think this is just reversion to spec: Note: a %format string can be used for formatting only the track title.

Can't think why :) . No I was hoping for simply the literal.

AFAICT this is the most recent thread on the subject! :)
