Gigabeat X30: Where to purchase in USA?
« on: March 24, 2007, 02:21:30 AM »
I want to upgrade the wife from an H320 (neither of us like it) to a Gigabeat X model.
It was never sold in the US officially.
I'm not keen on buying a used one on eBay from Australia and having it shipped across the earth.
(Although I am considering it.)

Any ideas where to get the X models in the US?

I've been looking for these also.  I've only seen them from Aussie websites for almost $400US.  I love Rockbox, but for that much money my next purchase is an Archos 704.  (I fly often.)  Hopefully someone responds with a site with reasonable pricing.

Why not just buy an F-series instead of the X-series. Functionally they're identical. The only disadvantage is they're slightly larger, with a slightly smaller (though same resolution) screen.

Llorean, you nailed it exactly. I want the bigger screen and the smaller body.

I personally can't see what difference .2 inches will make (the Gigabeat F's screen is quite large and very, very clear as it is). You can't display any more data on it, since it's the same number of pixels.

I don't know how much smaller the X's body is though, I suppose.

It's approx 13mm thickby 100mm long by 60mm wide.

I bought it last year here in Australia for Au$400.
Two weeks later the S30 came out, and at the time I was a bit disappointed that I didn't wait.
But now I've got Rockbox on it, I think I'm better off!

I find this difference in size significant enough to at least try to find an X version:

whoa, what sizes are being compared?  Is that an F10/20 or an F40 on the left?  If the image is of an F40/60 and an X40/60, I really want one now! :o

I would presume this is an apples to apples comparison (otherwise it would have no merit) and that these are both single platter devices.

The one on the left is certainly a single platter, meaning on the one on the right almost has to be.

I certainly wouldn't pay extra money for that minimal of a size gain, but that's just me I guess. As a note, the apparent size gain is skewed slightly because of how the players are angled in the first picture.

Battery Benchmarks suggest the X30 is either equivalent, or has slightly less runtime than the F in Rockbox, but since we don't know the state of the battery when the test was made, it's hard to really know anything useful from the runtime test page.

So true! I hadn't even noticed.

Here's a super cheap photo-chop done quick pic of the players 'unskewed':

There's still enough of a size difference for me to warrant an earnest search on my part.  :)
