WPS Gimp Spherical Button Help
« on: March 24, 2007, 02:08:55 AM »
Hey The Gimp experts.  I'm trying to create buttons for a new WPS.  I used this tutorial for creating spheres with reflections: http://gug.sunsite.dk/tutorials/ronq3/?PHPSESSID=ccaa

I don't use the Window picture reflection, just the highlight.  I can't seem to get the full spherical perception and glossy/glass effect.  Does anyone have any suggestions.

Here's what I have so far.
I couldn't map the "play" triangle to the sphere correctly, maybe that's what's throwing it off.

Anyway, the blue background will be the base color for the WPS, with a medium to large white Bold Font.  It's weird, but I find a medium-large bold white font does well in even direct sunlight.

Anyway, thanks in advanced.

This tutorial shows you how to make your button look like an actual glass sphere. Actual glass spheres have very small highlights which don't look too neat on buttons imho. A common way of making buttons look glossier is using a relatively big circle as a highlight (radius = ~1/2 of the button radius). Use a rubber to make the highlight translucent - more translucency in the middle of your button, less towards the edge.
As for the glow.. You'd rather use too much than too little ;)

This is of course only one of many ways to accomplish this and certainly not the best

Thanks for the advice.  I'll give it a try.
