tip: updating rockbox (fix codec failure)

(1/1)

jjf:
Hi, all.  I really appreciate the work you guys are doing.  Rockbox... well... rocks.

I want to help out in whatever little way I can, so I thought I'd archive this little pointer on the forums so my fellow n00bs will find it when they (like me) try to update, break their box (at 11:45 the night before a long road trip) with a "codec failure," and frantically hit the forums for help.

Here's my tip:

You have to be sure to copy every file that exists inside the .rockbox folder.  When unzipping directly to your player, some unzip programs (like Ubuntu's Archive Manager) require you to select the option "overwrite existing files."

bluebrother:
What's the tip in here anyway? That's the only way to update that gets mentioned ... if someone is unzipping only parts of the distributed archive he is installing / updating improperly and not following the official guidelines.

jjf:
The tip is to be sure you have the "overwrite existing files" option selected (if your archive program has such an option).

I did not think to check for this and was baffled when my "update" broke Rockbox.
