I have a few questions about rockbox
« on: March 20, 2007, 04:51:49 PM »
Okay I have a few quick questions.

1. Does Rockbox use more battery power than the Apple Firmware?

2. How long has rockbox been out for? (Just curious)

1) Yes. I generally get about 8 hours

2) Years. As far as I know, some of the first DAP's using ROCKbox firmware were older Archos models.

3) Totally worth reduced battery life IMO.

Also, battery life will be optimised eventually, possibly even surpassing the Apple firmware, as far as i know possibly coming close to the apple firmware eventually

Awesome I agree it is worth the battery loss. All I use Apple for is to watch my videos the only thing rockbox is alacking in.

While Rockbox has been out for years, it's been out for iPods for a shorter period of time.  I don't know *how* short but I'm moderately sure it's less than a year.

And totally completely worth it.

Depending from what point you count it's a bit more than a year with sound on the ipods. Just search for the famous "Gentlemen" mails: http://www.rockbox.org/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2006-01/0543.shtml

Wow.  I thought I got my iPod for my birthday, but it seems that I actually got it with my tax refund last year.  I know I got it specifically because I found out Rockbox was functional on it.

(Been here since May)

Ipodlinux has been out forever, and they haven't fixed the battery life issue yet.  I'm sure it'll happen eventually, but its likely to take a long time, since no one knows how the ipod's hardware works.

It isn't  unreasonable to expect that Rockbox could pass the original battery time though, once the hardware problems (or whatever the primary problem is) are solved. It's already surpassed the retail firmware battery life on several other varieties of players. Just don't expect this to happen remotely soon.
