Does Rockbox void my Warranty
« on: March 18, 2007, 08:55:37 PM »
Hey quick question.

Does installing rockbox onto my apple ipod void my warrranty by any chance.

I own a 5th generation Video ipod. (30 gig).

An answer would be nice because on some sites it has said it doesn't and on others it has said it does.

It depends a lot on your warranty, and how the person who's supposed to be honoring it chooses to interpret your warranty.

Your best bet is to read it yourself, and/or contact your warranty provider and ask them. But, chances are the answer is going to be "Yes, it does void your warranty", and it certainly does in the case of the standard iRiver warranty, as well Cowon has refused service to those who've installed Rockbox.

this is probably a stupid question but would rock box cause any problems to my ipod that would make it so the ipod would need to be replaced?

The process of installing Rockbox is actually safer than an Apple firmware upgrade, and Rockbox should not be able to damage the hardware in any way.

Alright because I had read on some sites that it can damage it due to it being in developmental stages, etc. I just don't want this thing to trash my warranty.

Another question too. Say my problem is due to Apple Firmware but I still have rock box is my warranty still voided?

Yes. Even if you remove Rockbox, your warranty would still be voided. It's the act of installing it that voids it, in most cases, not whether it's on there or not.

Generally it's a good idea to read warranties for yourself and see what they cover. Remember, we here are not lawyers, nor are we Apple, so we're in no way qualified to give you advice on either what the warranty actually means, or what Apple intends with it.

I'm going to just unistall rock box and then re install it after my warranty expires as even my best buy warranty doesn't support it at all. When I unistall it from my system all traces of it leave right?

If you remove the bootloader and delete the files, there are no obvious traces, and no service center should ever be trying to recover intentionally deleted files.

Alright thank you for all of your help. I enjoy your product but i've had ipod breakdowns in the past and I don't want to lose that warranty due to your program wheter it was caused by it or not.

Hopefully one day I can enjoy your product more.

Thank you.

And please note, as stated above:  if you completely delete Rockbox from your player, there would be no signs of it upon which to deny warranty service, presumably.

Information can be recovered in part, but if they attempted that would be:

1. Illegal
2. A very very long process

Actually, they could just undelete the files on the disk, and there you go, Rockbox.ipod. Whether it's illegal or not depends entirely on the conditions of the service contract. It's just a case of "It's highly unlikely they'll ever bother to undelete files on the HD looking for Rockbox so they have an excuse not to give service."

You could "shred" the files (securely delete with multiple random or pattern overwrites), but as said above this should not be necessary seeing as a recovery would be illegal in the first place.

Besides that; I'm guessing it's not the rockbox.ipod that would void the warranty since it's just a file stored on the harddrive (wich i THINK you are allowed to do even when using an ipod).
It's the bootloading part that is a bit in the gray zone?
