Resizing photos for Gigabeat F10 to get a full view on screen
« on: March 18, 2007, 12:54:48 AM »
There has been some postings about showing Jpeg photos on the Gigabeat. The complaint is that photos often are displayed very small on the screen  I thought I'd just add some directions for how I get the photos to fill the screen.

Keep a copy of the original photos because you will probably be reducing their quality for use on the Gigabeat.

Copy all the photos I want to use in a folder on my computer. Then I use the free program XNView to see and change the size.

When a photo shows in XNView (not a thumbnail) ...

Go to EDIT - SET SELECTION SIZE - choose 3:4

Draw a rectangle on the photo with the mouse. Go to EDIT - then CROP. Photo is cropped to correct ratio to match the Gigabeat screen.

Go to IMAGE - then to RESIZE. Make sure KEEP RATIO is selected. Type 480 in the WIDTH. The HEIGHT should automatically give a number of about 638.

Save the image. Copy it to the Gigabeat. It should fit perfectly into the Gigabeat's screen.

If you wish to put a photo taken in a landscape direction you must first rotate it 90 degrees using XNView. Then follow the above instructions.

(After the photo have cropped, it may be possible to use a batch program to change the resolution. This will speed up the processing of many photos. I haven't looked into this. I think XNView has some kind of a batch program, though I've never used it.)

For Windows XP audiences, the Image Resizer powertoy is great, since you just need to select handheld size (same size as gigabeat screen dimensions) and you're golden.
