no ipods found, aborting (60gb video ipod)

It seems that I have followed all of the instructions. My ipod now flashes in greyscale with "do not disconnect" so the firmware installed/extracted correctly? I converted it to fat32 manually, unmounted it, but the ipod loader can't see it. error is:
[INFO] Scanning disk devices...
[ERR]  No ipods found, aborting (it's connected)
[ERR]  Please connect your ipod and ensure it is in disk mode (it's in disk mode)
[ERR]  Also ensure that itunes is closed, and that your ipod is not mounted. (itunes is closed, and it's not mounted)
[ERR]  Please refer to the Rockbox manual if you continue to have problems. (don't see the solution)

also, if it's not mounted, it doesn't show up in the finder. If it doesn't show up in the finder, how can the ipodupdate program find it?
any ideas?

linuxstb:
Have you enabled the "Use ipod as a disk" option in itunes?   Sorry, but I forget the exact name.

tfcamp:
yep.

Does the Apple firmware still work after you converted it to FAT32, and can itunes still sync music to your ipod?

tfcamp:
since I'm on a mac, fat32 isn't supported with itunes, so I can't sync music. The ipod does look different though (like the firmware is working) it's grey, and the font's are different.
