Album art and metadata in buffer

Hello.

I'm curious what the status of these efforts is.  I know Brandon was working on the Metadata in Buffer patch last summer, and that the current album art implementation was considered subpar because MiB was not yet finished.  I don't know whats happened since then.  I see that the playback wiki page has been updated pretty regularly, so I assume something is happening.

I don't use album art or really even care about it, but given the volume of posts it seems to generate in these forums and elsewhere, some people appear to.

AFAIK, there has been very little progress on the whole issue. The playback engine isn't currently being worked on and MoB is still not much more than a plan. People who know the playback engine well enough to start this don't have the time or motivation and for the others the playback engine is very difficult to understand.
The current status on album art is that it needs MoB to be done the right way. There are possible alternatives I'd be glad to implement in order to commit the patch, but none of them is as good as using MoB, so ATM I'm working on other things.
