shure e2's and e3's on rockbox
« on: March 13, 2007, 09:36:08 PM »
just wondering if there are any other users that have e2cs or e3cs that they use with rockbox. i'm looking for some advice on eq settings as i'm not very knowledgable in those things.   any suggestions on how you have your settings? i have both e2s and e3s so advice on either one would be appreciated...
thanks,
xoppaw

I have e2c's.  I pretty much leave the EQ flat -- the trick with the e2c's is getting them well-fitted to your ear canal, so you have a decent bass response.

I tried a lot of settings for my E2 but eventually settled on flat.

I replaced them with some E500 and, again, played around, and am back with a flat eq.

You can use foobar+rockbox to calibrate your EQ for your headphones.  In foobar, you can use the following to generate a 400Hz 10 second test tone:

tone://400,10

Copy that to your clip board, goto edit, and chose "insert track".  Chose a few frequencies corresponding to the EQ bands you want to adjust in Rockbox.  You can only change 5 at a time, so this shouldn't be hard.

Then use the file converter to make it into a wav/flac/whatever file and load into rockbox.  You may want to replaygain them in foobar first, since I think foobar gives them all equal energy, not perceived loudness!  Once in, play them while adjusting the Rockbox EQ.  You should set the EQ so that they sound about the same volume, that way Rockbox will produce an accurate sounding copy of your music.

Once you've done that, you may want to tweak them a little more to taste, but thats a personal call.

saratoga: Wow that's excellent advice.  I think I'll try that also.  It's sort of a scientific approach to adjusting your EQ.  What frequencies do you tweak?  Do they correspond to specific instruments or perceived ranges?  (i.e. cymbals, vocals, snare, bass drum : or highs, mids, lows)

I read other threads on the topic of EQ recommendations.  It has always been a daunting task figuring out which frequencies to adjust and what levels to set them.  But this kind of makes it seem simple.

Thanks for the good advice.

There also is a thread at Misticriver in which people posted their EQ settings, for copying to your player.

http://misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=36635

Included are some Shure EQs, including for the E2C.  Of course, it all depends on your personal preference (I tend to keep things flat), but it's a way to start/experiment.

I think I will have to try Saratoga's idea too.  I tried adjusting the eq based on  a frequency response chart for e2c's.  That involved boosting the upper end mostly.  In theory that should produce a flatter output.  OTOH, I know I don't hear the high end like I used to, so I've boosted that to compensate.

For iRiver owners, the following point is ignorable:

iPods and IEMs (which are most all 16ohms) have a whole separate issue - the iPod's poor bass response with sub 32-ohm loads.

OK, I guess I am dense.  I want to do what Saratoga suggested, but I can't figure out how to 'goto edit, and choose "insert track".'  Insert track is not an option in my Edit menu.  Do I need a certain plugin or a particular version of foobar?  I have v0.9.4.1.

Arj:  I googled Foobar and Tone.  It came back with a Foobar Wikipedia page stating to use, "Add location.
 Â
* File->Add Location or just Ctrl+U.
* Type in the Tone://100.10 in the popup text box.
* Hitting enter will put the Tone in the New Playlist tab.
* Playing the tone will play a 100Hz tone for 10 seconds. (100.10)

Be careful when playing tones.  I forgot to turn the volume down, with my earphones in, when playing a much higher frequency and boy did that hurt.  :o

I haven't gone any further.  I suspect you will have to convert the "tracks" in the playlist to mp3 or whatever.  Save them in a playlist and copy the playlist/tracks to your player.  I'll try this after work today.

I don't know if all of that above is what you needed.  :D  Let me know.

**Edit** Read Febs post on EQ adjusting here: http://misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=36635&page=2  Fourth post from the top.  Haven't tried it, but good explanation.  And Dang, Febs, you dudes have been Rockboxing for a while!  :D

***Orignal***
Cool.  I'm playing around too.  I have a cfg.  I use Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5Pros.  I had a pair of Shure E3cs, but left them on the plane along with my Rio Nitrus.  Of course that was a couple of years ago.  Now I have the UEs and my Gigabeat F60.

About the cfg:
Â  * I have Crossfeed enabled.  All Crossfeed settings are set to defaults.
Â  * Everything else under the sound  settings menu is default, except of course the EQ.

The sound temperature is a little on the cool side. (I wanted to hear the trumpets pop and the high hat hiss.)  I love vocals and "hearing" them, so I tried to boost that range a little also.  The song I used to tune was, "I'd Like To" by Corinne Bailey Rae.  I hate putting her into a genre, but she has sort of Folk, Jazz, neo-soul kind of sound.

As you can see, EQ settings are entirely subjective and preferrential.

By The Way, reading the manual REALLY helped me with this.  Go figure.  ::)

Tell me what you think.

Audiophiles, with these settings it seems the vocals are pushed back a little, as in sound staging.  Not sure how to bring them to the front.  Maybe something with Crossfeed?  Thanks in advanced for the advice.
