Make rockbox secondary firmware?
« on: March 13, 2007, 02:41:04 AM »
How do I switch the original firmware and rockbox firmware so when I start up my ipod regularly it loads the apple firmware, and when I restart the ipod and lock the screen the rockbox firmware loads?

You'll have to recompile the bootloader with the boot order changed (requires minimal programming skills) or use an alternate bootloader (Loader 2 from the iPodLinux project) which is also not supported here. It'll work, but if it causes problems, you'll likely be asked to use the official one to verify the problems.

Rockbox is intended to be a fully functioning replacement software, so there was never an intent for it to be set up as secondary.

Of course, once you start the Apple firmware, it will continue to load until you reset the ipod.

Just a curious question.  Wasn't it secondary at one point in time? I thought I remembered when rockbox for the h120s came out it was secondary and only to developers it was first, but then they changed it but still kept this info in the wiki.  Or maybe I had it mixed up.

It was at the very start of the H1xx port but then was changed as developers got tired of having to hold REC to boot into Rockbox every time.

Nope. Even the very first version of the iriver bootloader started Rockbox by default.

When you leave it off or put new songs on it resets.  I like to use rockbox every once in awhile, just not a lot.

I just started the Apple firmware, connected USB, loaded some music onto my ipod, and disconnected.  When I disconnected, it went directly to the Apple firmware.

I'd like to try to recompile the boot loader myself, where can I get the win32 source?

The bootloader is in svn with the rest of the source.  When you run configure, it'll ask you what you want to compile.  Choose bootloader.

Theres actually a wiki page with a good deal of information.  Check the "for developers" section.  Also, keep in mind, the rockbox dev environment does not support win32, so you'll need to setup cygwin or else use linux.

I've been wanting this exact same thing. I like Rockbox and would use it a good deal of the time but at home my iPod finds it's resting place for charging and listening on a Marware dock which is also connected to my stereo system. The problem I have is if I leave it booted into Rockbox when it shuts itself down it automatically just restarts and continues this cycle. So I've taken to leaving it in Apple's firmware but there is a problem there as well. For some reason every once in awhile when it's sitting on the dock it will restart itself for no apparent reason, this has typically been no big deal but now when it reboots it boots into Rockbox and starts the cycle of shutting down and restarting. So I have to continually remember to make sure the hold button is on when I'm not listening so that this doesn't happen. Now, add into this equation a wife who isn't particularly technically inclined and doesn't want to have to fiddle with things to get em to work.

For me the best case solution would be to have Rockbox as secondary firmware that I can use when I wish but Apple's firmware boots by default to avoid problems with the dock and with my wife. ;)

I'm not a coder so unless I can find someone who will do a recompile for me I'm kind of screwed and becoming increasingly frustrated with having Rockbox on my iPod. I'm sure there are others in my situation which has led me to wonder if it would be possible for an option to be added to the bootloader install process that would as ask whether you want Rockbox to be the primary or secondary firmware? Or at the very least if the suggested recompile is rather simple could it be posted on the Rockbox site as an alternate bootloader for those with similar needs but not the skills to recompile it themselves?

Anymore thoughts on an alternate bootloader or an option within the standard bootloader?

The standard bootloader isn't going to get changed.

You can either see if someone in the unsupported builds forum has a modified one, or you can try out Loader 2 (unsupported here though too).

May I ask why it can't be changed? As I've said I'm not a coder but from what I've read in this thread (and what other info I've been able to find) it seems it's a fairly simple to do a recompile with the boot order switched so would it not be fairly easy to do it as an option?
