power cord during installation?

I am seriously considering downloading Rockbox to put onto my F40.  But in the preparation for installation, it says I need my power cord as well as my usb cord.  I lost my power cord a long time ago and have just been using the usb cord for the Gigabeat.  My question is: Do I really need the power cord to install Rockbox?

As far as I'm aware it isn't actually necessary.

Rockbox didn't use to support USB charging until a few weeks ago, but a power cable isn't really needed now.

I too lost mine a while ago but I use a USB PSP cable (when I need to) that has the USB2 connector and a power cable on the same lead.

correct me if i'm wrong but i can clearly remember charging my rockboxed gigabeat using the usb before the gigabeat port was even merged with cvs.

I've been charging mine exclusively with the USB cable, having never unpacked the rest of the stuff from the box. And I never even booted into the Toshiba supplied firmware once - so this is clearly wrong.

Warning to all re: The Dock. - I just posted this (fatal?) problem of mine in another thread. If anyone happens to have a solution, though, please let me know!

Big Mistake.

I docked the player while on, and hooked up the USB. Seemed ok thus far. I then attached the power cord, XP told me that it "found and installed the driver for the new device", and now my player is hooped!

It will start when Power On is held. Hooray for small miracles. However, it will not boot up, [SYSTEM ERROR 00000010 without the hard drive attached, and SYSTEM ERROR 00020090 with it attached]. What's worse, when I do the gigabeat surgery routine (which worked before when I was installing Rockbox), it won't recognize the hard drive when I plug it back onto the player. Not through Explorer, or My Computer (with refreshing), or anything. It said "E: is corrupt and not readable" in Explorer before, and the "Safely Remove Hardware" program seemed to see that it was a Toshiba hard drive, but now it doesn't even do that anymore.

I can hear that little hard drive spinning, though... Please, somebody help me save it!!

Just as a note, it's perfectly safe to hook up both the power cord and a USB cable on the dock. In fact, it's necessary to for the dock to function properly, and I do it regularly.

Since I don't know what the System Error codes mean though, I'm afraid I can't really help you with those. It sounds like you've already tried what I would've suggested.

Well, I don't know what is up with vancouverrob's player, but the Dock works just fine here.

my docks always worked great.I almost am tempted to blame windows  .  If you still have a warranty of any kind I would use it if you could. I've never heard of those errors before.
