sorry scorche and Llorean, I misunderstood/didn't explain clearly in my post Llorean's message about the wiki page.

on the topic of the backplate, the fact that the serial number is different is irrelevant to its functionality. The serial number can either be removed from the backplate(I think) or you can just know that the number on the backplate isn't really your serial number.

It can still be replaced, just like every other part of the ipod.
Also, if the harddrive is replaced with one that has more capacity, the backplate will be changed to a larger one, seeing as there will be a bigger hard drive
