Error -2

It appears I took a recent commit that made rockbox for gigabeat look for the "rockbox.gigabeat" file in the .rockbox folder same as the other targets a little too seriously. I now get the -2 error every time I boot up. This means I can't access the player with USB to fix it.

Due to some naive incompetence on my part and through using the "fast boot" files I appear to have overwritten the original firmware on the gigabeat itself (I have it backed up on my HD) so attempting a hard reset (load with vol up) didn't work. Do I have any other options or have I just bricked my player?

EDIT: Thinking about this rationally there isn't, but the player isn't bricked. I'll just have to buy an HD enclosure and sort it out that way.

Have you tried the Gigabeat Recovery Instructions on the port page.  Basically you are turning the GB harddrive into a USB drive without the enclosure.  The instructions are here:

Did you compile and update your own new bootloader after that change was made? The bootloader on the wiki is old enough that it doesn't include this update.

I had the same issue when I first installed Rockbox on my Gigabeat. If you followed the instructions, you should have FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG. Hold Vol+ when you turn on your Gigabeat and it should restore the original firmware. Now turn if off and power it back on again; you should be in the original firmware. Now go to settings and change the computer connection to "Gigabeat Room" instead of Windows Media Player. Now connect your Gigabeat to your computer and it should be recognized.

The issue is that you are using an old bootloader that doesn't recognize rockbox.gigabeat when it is in the .rockbox folder. I'll attach an updated bootloader to GigabeatFXPort page on the wiki that doesn't have this issue. Follow the instructions on the page to reinstall the bootloader and make sure you have a backup.

EDIT: I didn't realize you deleted the original firmware. You'll have to enter Rescue Mode by holding "Menu" as Rockbox loads and connect to your computer via a USB cable (not using a dock).

EDIT2: The latest bootloader is now available at http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/gigabeat/ . Please note, this is the only official bootloader.

Sorry, but I'm confused a bit here. My rockbox.gigabeat file is in the root directory, i am using the Jan 18 bootloader, all works well so far. I have downloaded recent builds as well. Should I be updating the bootloader, and if so what do i do with the gobbledy gook I see when I click on the latest bootloader you put on the FXPort page?
 As you can tell I'm a new user.

If your rockbox.gigabeat is in the root folder you will have no issues. However if you move it into .rockbox you will get "Rockbox error: -2" and have to undergo the process I described. If you would like to update your bootloader, all you need to do is replace FWIMG01.DAT with the one that I attached (r12732). FWIMG01.DAT can be found in /GBSYSTEM/FWIMG .

Ok, I understand now, however the second part was how to download the .dat file correctly from the website, in Firefox at least it downloads as htm page. Would it be better in a zip file? Just that i don't want to download and install in case the file gets damaged in the process.

The same thing happens on my Firefox. If I download it and rename the file there's no issue. To make sure, I would run an MD5 sum on the file to make sure its an exact match (the correct MD5 is listed on that page).

On Mac, MD5 is built in: use the command 'md5' in terminal.
On Linux, MD5 is also built in: use the command 'md5sum' in terminal.
On Windows, it's a third party application. You can find a version that should work fine at this site.

Hi:

  I had the same problem with Firefox as all of you. So I just held my nose and launched the dreaded Internet Explorer. When You click on the file with IE, it prompts you to save or open.

  Whomever set up the link, is IE centric. Right clicking with save-as just gets the htm link.


  Hope future downloads are more Firefox friendly.

When I click on the file here: http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/gigabeat/ which is the only officially provided one, it works fine in Firefox.

The one on the GigabeatFX Port page probably doesn't have the proper mime type set, but should be plenty downloadable just by right clicking and choosing to save the link, but is not an official file.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't really understand what I was doing or read the wiki properly despite being a rockbox user for 22 months now, hehe. The recovery mode worked fine and I upgraded to the new bootloader as well.

I also have an enclosure on the way which should be useful for the definitely bricked iriver H340 that's on my desk...
