Archos Studio 20 can't read new drive
« on: March 08, 2007, 11:51:14 PM »
Trying to install a Seagate Ultra ATA/100 60GB hard drive -- drive was formatted and pre-loaded using direct PC interface (Win 98SE) and works fine in PC.  Jukebox says the drive is empty.  I know of the problem with big partitions, but this is only 60GB.  Could the Ultra ATA/100 interface be the problem? If so, any workarounds?  (Running latest Rockbox release.)

If it is formatted correctly, it should have no issues with the drive.

For those who have a similar problem, here's the deal -- Jukebox recognizes a drive is there but says it is empty.  Turns out the drive was setup as an extended DOS partition instead of a primary partition, which is required.  The fix was to de-install the drive, connect it to a PC via an adapter, and use fdisk to remove the extended partition and add a primary partition.  After re-load and re-install, everything works fine.
Lesson learned -- double-check that drive is setup and formatted correctly BEFORE installing!  Be mindful of the type of partition created during setup.
