Rockbox/Factory Firmware Screwing up on ipodvideo
« on: March 08, 2007, 11:02:43 AM »
 Here's what's goin on:
on the original firmware, when I plug my ipodvideo into a computer, it doesn't go into disk mode (the battery still recharges)

on Rockbox, It goes into disk mode, but then resets over and over again.

Can anyone please help me out here? this really sucks, and I'm nervous that Rockbox might be glitching up itself and the Factory Firmware.

How would I find out? I had the zip file before my computer crashed, so that's not good.
The only problem is Disk mode. everything else is ok. If there's a way in Rockbox to find out, let me know, and I can answer your question. I can offer a vague answer though. I downloaded Rockbox around late December/early January this year. I know it probably won't help, but it's better than nothing.

The build version is reported on the splash screen when you start Rockbox.

Please upgrade to a recent build before going any further.

Here's a Major problem with that...
So far, I've known this for not even a day (literally worked fine this morning). All of the computers in my school are macs, and I can't access my ipod on them. It doesn't show up in the mac version of My Computer (i forget what it's called). If I have problems on a Windows Computer, I'll check back here (or restore it to the factory settings, which'll suck)
btw; it's 070107-0751

If you've been using the same build, and the problem started on its own, there's a decent chance it's something else you've done.

It's entirely possible you just have a bad cable, because it sounds like your iPod is drawing power, but not even trying to make a USB connection. Since it worked before, and since the problem occurs in the hardware disk mode (which Rockbox cannot affect or modify in any way), the problem is most likely either the cable, the computers you attach it to, or a hardware flaw.

... Huh. Didn't think of that. Let me make sure I'm gettin this right, My cable sucks and I should try another one? It sounds REALLY plausible in the factory firmware, since You are correct it's charging, but not going into disk mode (or opening up on my computer as a drive.).
That sounds possible, But what about Rockbox? it tries to go into disk mode, but then restarts over and over until I take out the cord, or switch to the originaal firmware. I think I should delete Rockbox, but, as previously mentioned, it won't show up on my computer (or in iTunes). I'll try the cord thing, but then again, I'm in school right now, so results of that will be posted later in the afternoon or evening. if anyone can give amymore help 'till then, it'll be greatly appreciated :)

Hey Lloren, You were Right! my brother happened to have his ipod and my usb cord with him. I plugged in his Ipod, and It didn't go into disk mode! You were Right! thank you so much. Now I don't have to delete Rockbox, and I get to rub it in my brother's faces (they were makin fun of me the whole time, sayin rockbox was a piece of crap and I shouldn't have downloaded it. Shows them!)
But before this post draws to a close, I'm still curious about Rockbox. Could a crappy cord cause Rockbox's Disk Mode to restart constantly?

Remember that the Disk Mode on iPods is built-in.  Rockbox just calls it when it detects a USB power connection.

Since your USB cable wasn't working properly (getting power but not data), Rockbox would reboot your iPod into Disk Mode, which would not see a data connection and would reboot your iPod back into "normal" mode (where Rockbox and the original firmware run).  Rockbox would see the power connection and reboot, keeping the loop going.

I believe there's been an update to Rockbox's USB detection so that it won't automatically reboot if there's only a power connection, but since you were running a build from January, you didn't have that.

Get yourself a good cable and update your Rockbox build.  You'll find that that several new features have been added (like SNES SPC playback :)).

No you can't play ROMs, SPC is the SNES music sound format.
