« on: March 08, 2007, 07:18:33 AM »
hello rockboxer

i own a gigabeat f40 and if i connect the device only with the usb cable - it works.
but if i connect the dock with an usb cable, power on the gigabeat and put them into the cradle - it doesn't work. do i need a dock driver? where can i get the driver?

This is not entirely true.  The Gigabeat cradle has been supported since 20070212.

Mr.pi what build/bootloader are you using?  Do you have the AC adapter plugged into the cradle also?  I can't really help if it's something else other than updating the firmware and bootloader.

I stand corrected, did not know that  :P

But I just tried it out under Linux and although the GB is recognized it is not being automounted.
Mhh notice now that it is also not automounted anymore when connected with cable only (which used to work). So I'll try and find out what is going on will report back.

The dock works fine here in three aspects:

1) charging
2) lineout
3) USB

For the latter two you need to use the switch on the right hand side to select.

I do not think you need a driver, but I might be wrong and still use the one that gigabeat room installed unknowingly.

I think the dock is recognized as a sort of USB hub, because windows makes the "USB device connected" sound when I connect it sometimes. That could be a problem because windows might automatically install the wrong drivers for it.

I hate to make the obvious point, but sometimes it's the simplest thing - did you check the switch on the side? I've not had any problems at all since starting to use the dock.

You are right, the dock has a 4 port USB hub inside.

Having used Rockbox quite successfully for the past 2 months now on my Gigabeat F10, I thought to myself, "Hey, let's see if the player will look pretty charging in that dock that it came with."

Big Mistake.

I docked the player while on, and hooked up the USB. Seemed ok thus far. I then attached the power cord, XP told me that it "found and installed the driver for the new device", and now my player is hooped!

It will start when Power On is held. Hooray for small miracles. However, it will not boot up, [SYSTEM ERROR 00000010 without the hard drive attached, and SYSTEM ERROR 00020090 with it attached]. What's worse, when I do the gigabeat surgery routine (which worked before when I was installing Rockbox), it won't recognize the hard drive when I plug it back onto the player. Not through Explorer, or My Computer (with refreshing), or anything. It said "E: is corrupt and not readable" in Explorer before, and the "Safely Remove Hardware" program seemed to see that it was a Toshiba hard drive, but now it doesn't even do that anymore.

I can hear that little hard drive spinning, though... Please, somebody help me save it!!

hello again,

still the usb cable is working (gigabeat->cable->usb-port) but no cradle support for me. the image you can see is in german and says "unknown device". is there a special driver for the dock?

if i plug in the cradle something is recognized but then device manager says unknown device.

solutions?

thanks in advance says

Is your "USB-Massenspeichergeraet" something else than the Gigabeat?

What is the position of the USB/line-out switch on the cradle? It should be set to USB for USB mode.

Is the hub supported now (r15390)? Is there a thread, where this is disussed? I'd love to use that USB - connector on the side of the cradle...

Since the pinout for the Gigabeat docking connector shows separate wires for the usb 2.0 connection and the line out it does not make sense to me why the dock has a switch on it to select between the two functions.  The fact that the dock is a hub might factor into this, but note that the dock has TWO usb connectors though one is a 1.1 master (and the docking connector does have two usb interfaces one master 1.1 and one slave 2.0) and the other a 2.0 slave.  Rockbox doesn't use the 1.1 master which I gather was intended to enable digital camera to gigabeat transfers.

I've had half an idea to open up my dock and maybe re-wire it so that the internal hub isn't used and the usb "B" connector goes direct to the dock 2.0 lines,  the charger input goes to the dock power lines, and the line out goes to the 1/8" phono jack.  Would this allow use of all connections at the same time?

Perhaps the reason for the line out / usb switch was to allow having all the connections plugged at the same time, but to disconnect the usb from the gigabeat because the unit won't play while plugged into the usb connection?  In this case the above surgery might not be needed (but then what's the internal hub for?)
